aris
Perhaps there is a technical reason - if so, what is it?

johnphilip
Cost, take a gun that has no engravings on it and leave a blank cheque.
aris
Sure, but even the best London guns don't seem to have engraved barrels.
The Essex Hunter
Plenty of meat on a rifle barrel.....far less wall thickness on a shot gun to scribble on.... TEH
Harnser
Proberbly because the barrel wall are to thin to safely take engraving . Having said that I have seen shot guns with engraving on the barrels around the chamber area . You will see lots of handguns and rifles engraved ,proberbly because the barrel walls are much thicker on these guns . Harnser
Andy H
You may find some very old muzzle loaders with fully engraved barrels but now the barrels of a shot gun can be down to .030" .75mm in places so the last thing you want to be doing is creating weak points and fault lines in a barrel that thin. subsonicnat
Thats why stuff for the aircraft industry was Ground instead of turned, (Even The Bolts). Any Form of turning left is considered a weak spot on aircraft... Needless to say I used to grind a lot of aircraft stuff..

Dekers
What Fister said, and if you want a barrel engraved then go for it. I have no interest whatsoever, whilst many may argue shotguns/rifles are things of beauty, mine are all working tools. I look after ALL my guns really well, but I have no interest in decorating them (or paying for work which has no technical benefit)!
