stubby
was in the shop buying some carts and clays, and noticed one of those sticks/magnet for picking up used carts, the pictures looked good with a fair amount stuck to the stick, but at £49.98 each, a bit more than I'd want to pay, has anyone made one themselves? if so how, or purchased cheaper? Wilts#Dave
Bought one for the old man, handy bits of kit if a little pricey. We use autos on pigeons which spit the cases all over the place, really handy for picking up all the empties in brambles/ditches etc.
VicW
Start with the round magnet from an audio speaker, not too large obviously. They usually have a hole in them. Find a suitable rod to pass through the hole and then a fixing method depending on whether the rod is a tube or solid. Alternatively the telescopic type available from tool suppliers or the internet do the job but they do not pick up many cases at a time but at a fiver a time what the heck. Vic. Guest cookoff013
if you want to do it on cheap....... buy a stick / broomhandle and shove a decent magnet on it. http://www.first4magnets.com/circular-disc-rod-magnets-c34/25mm-dia-x-20mm-thick-x-6mm-hole-n52-strongest-grade-neodymium-magnet-26kg-pull-p3669 that magnet is abit overkill, but you get the idea? also, dont put your iphone near it or credit cards.... activeviii
Order the magnets from ebay. 12mm is what I used. 10mm wood dowel in 10mm slugs. 15mm ALU tube from b and q. 2pack glue. Mix a good amount of glue and roll one of the dowels in it and put in tube. Then a magnet followed by dowel the magnet then dowel. So on till you have 5 magnets and 6 dowels. The last dowel on the end of tube. You can put a plastic cap on the ends to tidy it all up. You Ned the wood dowels or the magnets act at one and only work on the two ends. With the dowel you have 10 areas I used an old hiking pole for mine. Works very well and cost less then a tenner

I used a magnet from a defunct Pond pump, taped to a broom handle.
Westley
I use a speaker magnet attached to an adjustable aluminium pole from one of those duster things. Folds down to around 18" and extends to double that.

deny essex
I used a magnet from a defunct Pond pump, taped to a broom handle. Same ,pond pump magnet epoy'd to a 99 pence shop fishing whip, picks the empties from blackthorn and ditches with little effort.
arjimlad
I saw a spaniel which appeared to take great delight in catching the empties spat out by his master's semi auto, once ? I don't think he quite managed to spit them out in the bin though. Worth a thought if you have a bored dog.
Marki
I bought one for around about £12, just can't remember the name of the company I remember they made clay traps as well. I'll do a search and see what I find. EDIT: It was Promatic but they no longer have stock. Sorry. Edited January 29, 2015 by Marki
