marsh man
With only a few days to go for the coastal boys most of us are now finished , guns cleaned , decoys put away and given the dog a well earned rest. So how did your season go . Good Bad or average. I would say without the amount of geese we had round this way the duck shooting would have been only average due to lack of any prolonged cold snaps , duck arriving late and to much water about. Where as the geese started to arrive late Sept / early Oct and reached a peak around early Dec , the numbers quoted were from around 12,000 to as high as 18,000 so somewhere around !5,000 wouldn't be far off , if you lived close enough , had the time and could go at a minutes notice getting a goose wasn't as hard as getting a duck , where as geese moved about every day around the marshes and duck only moved if they had to and a lot of the days they would sit on the estuary and stay there all day as there is very little or no shooting to disturb them. So to sum it up I dare say we were luckier than most for the amount of wildfowl we had in the area and if you were prepared to go in all conditions and work at it you would be unlucky to keep coming home with a empty bag. Reading the different reports of flights throughout the season my vote and the one I would have loved to had been on , would go to " anser2 " moonlight flight for Geese. Big Mat
I only put a few birds in the bag this season, managed my first pinkfoot though! Overall I'd say it was a very enjoyable season! I've got two more flights next week then I'll be getting cleaned up and counting down to September 1st.
E.w.
I had a good season with many geese in the bag mallard and a few teal, got out this morning with my brother and shot four Canada geese and three mallard between us, it's been a great season for bringing on one of my young lab that's me done. fenboy
Considering it is only my second season on the foreshore I had a great season , I think I have finished now unless I manage to squeeze one more flight in. My bag return so far consists of 15 Widgeon , 9 Pinks , 6 Mallard , 2 Teal and a Shoveler for 45 shots fired , not a huge bag by some standards but as my first season consisted of just 3 Widgeon it is a vast Improvement ! With only two seasons under your belt " fenboy " I would say you had an excellent season , I know one or two hardened fowlers who would have been more than happy with the same results as yours . You had a few firsts and I am sure your moonlight goose is only a season or two away , as for a White Front and Pintail , who knows could be next season or you might have to wait a bit longer but keep trying and one day you will tell us you have just ticked off the last one on your wish list . scolopax
Had a great weeks foreshore wildfowling holiday in Scotland putting a few duck and geese in the bag, nearly all the duck were mallard which is unusual for estuary shooting. Locally for me the ducks were just about non existent, two wigeon and a teal from about 15 flights! Luckily in those same flights the geese were a bit more productive, with eight Greylags and a couple of Pinks coming home with me.

FatFreddysCat
Fairly average season down here. 17 trips to foreshore, of which 7 were blanks (hoping to get 1 more in on Thurs) 1 greylag, 1 mallard, 12 wigeon, 12 teal, 2 golden plover (26 total) 51 shots taken Average 1.5 birds per visit, Had another 4 mallard and 1 teal inland but don't count those in the 'fowling bag. fenboy
Motty I think you might be up to no good there are good reports of fenboy he's quite a talent with dog and gun by all accounts. While I may not be too bad with the gun , there is still plenty of work to go on the dog bit , my last one was fine but the current one still has plenty to learn , not least that when I put duck decoys out I do not want them immediately retrieving , but to be fair I have not lost a bird on the marsh this season so he has done his job well enough , with a little more maturity and some work before next season he will be just fine. silver pigeon 3
Been an enjoyable season, but by no means a bumper year. I am out tomorrow morning and I think this will be my 38th flight of the season, I am hoping to head out a couple of times next week to make a round 40. I haven't totalled the bag up yet but I don't think it will be more than 15 birds so far, but as we all know birds in the bag isn't what it is all about. Best of luck to anybody who is out this week.
