Some more pictures of the other projects in the forge.

OPERATION COAT/HAT/DOG LEAD HOOK.

This started out as an inch (or 25mm ish if you prefer metric) square bar around 6 inches long which Nigel had kindly prepared with the hacksaw by cutting down its length just over half way from each end at right angles.

This was heated in the fire and then split down the cuts and opened out to form a cross. This was down to The Good Lady's hammer skills, which she did well at :good:

From there it was handed back to me and OF talked me through the processes to form the hook.

Firstly draw out one of the arms of the cross.

Then bend it over to form the hook.

20150228_130739_zpsuyangbwu.jpg

Finally, punch 2 holes through for the screws.

And you end up with a hook to hang your coat on.

The final project was a door knocker.

Again, building on the previous skills learned. Drawing out and widening a price of inch X quarter flat bar to form one part of the hinge.

Curving it over.

20150228_145040_zps5gzp9hak.jpg

The next step was to make the knocker part from a old horseshoe. Again flattening and curving over.

20150228_145826_zpsdrbhltld.jpg

The two parts of the hinge made, we needed a pin to connect them together. Now this could have been a simple straight piece of bar, but OF said that wouldn't do and to make it decorative.

He drew a diagram (a spiral) with chalk on the anvil to act as a guide and left me to make it on my own from the skills I had picked up throughout the day.

In the excitement/panic, I missed out the first step. Thinning and drawing it out  and just started to curl it.

20150228_150413_zpsh7c0ljg9.jpg

I realised my mistake after I finished the first spiral.

This wasn't a problem, as all I had to do was forget to thin and draw the other one :)

The pin was made.

At this point, OF'S wife came in and said the pet rabbit was awake. The good lady, being a softy when it comes to animals, deserted her position of taking photos of my workmanship, so I've no pics of the hinge being built.

This is the 3 finished projects.

The weeks before I went to OF'S, I had a look on YouTube at the various 5 minute videos of pokers being made.

It takes a lot longer than 5 minutes.

We were in the forge from 10am till 4.30 pm and made the 3 items, stopping for a tea and lunch break, where cake played a heavy part ;)

Again I had a fantastic time learning from OF'S laid back experience.

Cheers mate :good:

Sunday was shooting day, but more on that later ;)

You can tell it's a proper workshop, most flat surfaces have got measurements on them! :good::good:

An the curved ones 😂

I did tidy it up a bit for Sabs visit but it is a workshop that most people feel comfy in

There is a lot of history to it back about 400 years

Well there's another story 😊

All the best

Sunday is Shooting Day.

OF said for me to leave my guns at home, as it can be a hassle bringing them on the ferry and that he would be able to sort something out for us.

This was our last day on the island so after breakfast, the good lady and I checked out of the accommodation and followed OF a short distance, to the shooting ground. We had chatted about the shoot over dinner the previous evening and it was going to be a bit of a friendly warm up for the NvS charity shoot, nothing like a bit of friendly competition to improve your aim ;)

It wasn't until we arrived at the ground and about to take to the peg, that OF handed me a gun slip and said "see how you get on with that one".

My gun for the day.

20150301_121154_zps5whqm3gh.jpg

Perfectly balanced.

20150301_120914_zpsrqplj5bo.jpg

The Good Lady also rose to the challenge to shoot and this was her firearm for the day.

20150301_121648_zpsnclcos6w.jpg

The ground was over a "Chine" (gorge) around 80 yards wide and 30 yards deep. The traps were positioned around the top and the pegs were at various heights along one side, right down to the bottom. It is an informal shoot made up of only 2 squads, with no prima donnas. We were made to feel very welcome by everyone, the banter and merriment flowed. It was just a bit of fun for like minded folk to bash a few clays.

OF offered Amy much encouragement and coaching and she did well. In fact, she was doing better than me on a couple of stands

On one stand she hit 7 out of the 8 which was made even more impressive by the fact the "local" chaps were averaging 3-4.

OF straighted this stand with his 10 bore :w00t:

The bottom stand could only be described as a springing teal on steroids. The trap was some 30 yards above the peg, launching a clay almost vertical and falling 90+ yards away. The good lady did well on this one with the 20b and Nigel's encouragement.

Well done sweetheart

Yes OF was shooting his double 10b, just for a bit of fun, and what a lovely gun it was too. Sadly towards the last few stands, it showed its age and suffered a slight misfortune :cry1: OF took this in his stride (such is the laid back way of island life). He said he will dig out the receipt and have it repaired under the manufacturers warranty. If it is still valid after some 130 years

I really did feel for Nigel when this happened. Hope you get it sorted for a reasonable price.

The final stands were back on the top in the wind. Both of these were incomers from the other side of the "Chine".

The clays during the round were not simos, nor were they on report, but somewhere in between. The first clay was set off and the second around a second or two later. If you waited for the first one to develop into a easy shot, the second one was gone. This style suited me and I scored a respectful 67%. Not bad considering I was shooting a "strange" gun on a "virgin" ground . The good lady also shot her personal best there too :yahoo: She doesn't shoot much, in fact this round has just about made her total number of shots just over a slab since she started less than 3 years ago. She usually comes along and provides baked goodies  takes photos and offers me support by carrying my gun and cartridges ;):ninja::/:lol:

Seriously though, Amy does take all the pictures that compliment my write ups and without them you would have nothing to read.

I would like to thank magman for his time and efforts helping Amy with this fantastic gift for me. Of course, Amy for coming up with the idea and organising the various parts. And again Old Farrier for his time and creating a incredible experience that I will always remember.

You sir are a legend :good:

It was at last year's PW Charity Shoot that I first met OF and the prize he offered in the raffle was on the top of my wish list. Sadly by the time lady luck came my way and one of my tickets were pulled from the hat, it had already gone or I didn't see it on the table piled high with other great prizes. Amy came up with the idea after I couldn't stop talking about OF and his prize, more so after he visited to the Crown Shoot last season as a guest of Magman's (who also met OF for the first time at the PW Charity Shoot).

I would encourage you all to try and take part in the PW Charity Shoot if you can. It is not about the scores for me, but about meeting old friends and making new.

The Crown Shoot has had many guests over the years as a result of the charity shoot plus other PW member's have also received invites from friendships made at the shoot. It is a worthwhile cause and a great day out.

Please take part if you can.

All the best.

Mark

Hi

Just to say well done Sabs it was a brilliant weekend for me

To those that have followed the thread I hope you could see how Sabs skill levels and confidence in working metal at temperature of 1200 degrees increased as the day went on 😃

We started with a long piece of materiel easy to heat and hold by hand

He was cautious to start (good thing) and as the day progressed I gently stretched him further using and applying the skills he had learned on the small light project to a larger one

Heavier shorter material requiring the use of tongs to hold it

The tea and cake breaks are part of the day in more ways than many think

First 1 1/2 hours is about as much learning as most can take in and absorb

Second I like cake 😂😂

As you can see Sabs did well in creating and finishing the three projects .

Big thanks to Amy for the pictures and organising it for him

And to echo some comments

It was the charity shoot that brought this about yes money was raised 😃😀

The south were robbed 😣

A great day was had

And the best bit

Friendships were forged 😊😊

This to me is what it's all about so please give it a go who knows you may be the next member in my forge or on a day at the crown or many of the other fine days that are offered

I won a day with ayano3 brilliant 😃😀and had my first pink foot

So I ask you all rise to the challenge as Sabs did and support the charity shoot

The clay shoot on the Sunday

I think its a bit more laid back than most and defiantly not the norm

Just testing challenging fun Sabs did well and Amy well just fantastic never shot a 20 bore before (northerners to tight to buy the cartridges) strange gun and a crowd and her best score ⭐looks like the ladies prize at the charity shoot is under pressure

Bit of wear and tear on the old 10 hey ho it wasn't built to shoot clays it'll be fixed in a week or two

So just a great weekend that passed to fast so big thanks to all involved and look forward to the next time

All the best

Brilliant write up (and pictures of course).

Everything in this sums up perfectly all that is the very best about Pigeon Watch, the friendships, the laughs, the sharing of skills and experience, the banter/craic, well as I said, everything.

With the success of the Crown shoot as the catalyst to raising an additional enormous sum for PW's chosen charity ORCHID,let's try and make 2015 a bumper year for fundraising. Try and make the shoot at Orston, you don't have to be a crack shot or even a regular clay shooter, the day is about all the things listed above, not just the scores (well it's a given that the North will win again). I hope that those that, for whatever reason, can't get to the shoot will put their hand in their pocket and donate via. the Just Giving page when it's up and running, think the total number of PW members is over 30 thousand (not absolutely certain about that figure) now if only 5% are active that is 1,500 people, if we can get half that number to donate a fiver that would be nearly £4 grand for Orchid before the shoot and raffle tops the pot up.

Come on Pigeon Watch can do it, together we can make this the best year to date.
