pigeon controller
As normal setout on Friday to find the birds, we headed to the rape we shot last week only to find lots of tyre tracks and no birds. So the other shooters must have heard us and had a go in the week. We kept looking but the natural food table is so great at this time of the year it is difficult to find a decent flock to decoy. The weather forcast was for incomming rain so we had travelled about seventy miles with no luck so we settled for some crow bashing . The farm we set up on is one of those which have a resident two hundred birds always about . It use to be a cracking pigeon farm in the past as the slurry which he sprayed the fields had a high content of chickweed seeds and the fields would be covered with chickweed which the pigeons would love . It now has a small amount of clover in with the grass. The farmer is always asking us to shoot the crows and jackdaws but we usually end up with pigeon. The wind was blowing the rain hard into a hedge so we set up the brolly on the other side and kept dry. We had no decoys for crows and kept the pigeon decoys dry in the Disco. We soon called a couple of crows with the Primos caller and we were away it was 14.00 and we added any shot birds to the pattern and shot till 17.00. The birds would not come to the decoys but came over our heads with the wind behind them like Express Trains. We had a few pigeons come within range and they were cracking shots which brightened the day. We finished up with fortysix crows and jackdaws and seven pigeon . When we started the farmer had told us it had not been shot but the farm hand on the tractor told us it was shot every Sunday by two other guys and they dont get many at all . Saturday saw us heading for some spring rape which had been planted two weeks ago , it had zero birds. We looked at some more peas , linseed and clover but could not find any quantity good enough to shoot. The most we found on clover was nine. We decide to drive off our normal route so we did first left second right and kept doing this around the county. We eventually found some birds on a pea field and as we watched it a shot wrang out and a crossing bird dropped we had not seen the decoy pattern as it was obscured by a crossing hedge. At that point the phone went and a voice said " do you want to go on the other field and keep them moving" We did not have to be asked twice . As it was there were seven fields and we went on to the lower one and set up after a while DB went down to talk to the other two shooters. We set up with the magnet and ten on spikes but the birds were very wary of the magnet and we had to put it behind us on the field at the end of the pattern as we were set up under a tree in the middle of the field. After a while one of the other shooters came up to my hide to scrounge some coffee and watch me shoot, the birds were comming to the pattern from all directions with a very turbulent wind. Then it would go very quiet for twenty minutes but it allowed us to chew the fat and for them to criticise my shooting . I tried to explain that the Proper Cartidges are so good that the shot in the barrel is forced to the periphery so you get a perfect circle and when you are on the bird it can " Pass Through the Circle" with out a blemish ?? We had a cracking days shooting and picked up fifty birds which is good for this time of the year and reminds me why I travel south Greece during the quiet period. aga man
Great report PC, although things have obviously slowed up for you, it seems like you have had a good winter with some cracking bags off the rape. yickdaz
not your usual tally but still very worthwhile bags I was out today but never even set up, going to be a long wait till harvest now, give or take a few bags on clover that's all we have to go at with no peas or spring rape in the areas we shoot
