Fredwalton
It's meant to get hot here next week, so if this is the case could they harvest before mid July?
aga man
Your lucky if your rape is swathed, some great pigeon shooting can be had on the laid swaths. If your rape is about to be swathed then there's agood chance it will be harvested by mid july. As fenboy says it depends on the weather to dry out the crop and reduce the moisture content. 2-3 weeks is a good average if the weather stays dry/ sunny. motty
I would say the rape is a little way off being ready around these parts. I would be surprised if there is much harvested before the end of July.

kitchrat
I am always concerned that dead birds crashing into a really dry swarth will dislodge so much seed as to enrage a farmer, therefore I do not shoot over swarths. I'm not good enough to be able to park dead birds accurately enough to miss the rows, the rows are too close.

I once asked one of my farmers if I should shoot the swarfed rape or not for that same reason , his reply was not to be so bloody daft the pigeons will knock far more seed out dropping on top of and walking along the swarfs . Of course different farmers may have different ideas , but I would say if you have swarfed rape you have a good chance of a bg bag as not many do it now and its the first real chance for the pigeon to have a good feed of rape seed. JDog
Can you not shoot them on the way or from the rape on grass?? Lateral thinking at this time in the morning?
Old Boggy
I once asked one of my farmers if I should shoot the swarfed rape or not for that same reason , his reply was not to be so bloody daft the pigeons will knock far more seed out dropping on top of and walking along the swarfs . I too have one farmer who is only too keen for me to shoot over swathed rape, and have had some good bags ( for me anyway) If only one path is made to cross the lines of swathed rape to either set up decoys on top or collect the slain, then I suppose that it limits the amount of spilt seed. Not many farmers in my area do actually swath it but combine through once the moisture content gets down to about 14%

kitchrat
Can you not shoot them on the way or from the rape on grass?? Different area again, almost no grass, just cereals or rape around here. The only grass is horse paddocks so no chance of shooting there. Plus they seem to prefer to feed in the middle of fields so I have to use power poles isolated trees etc as cover and there is little choice considering the birds can choose where they come from.
