there was a decent wind blowing today, and seeing as I booked some time off work which I do every year around harvest some shooting was on the cards the old fella rang me to see what time we were going I got to his house by 10.30 am loaded his 4x4 up and set off looking 10 mile journey to the barley stubbles first few places we looked at wasn,t showing much on the barley so carried on to the rape stubbles another 12 miles away

we decided not to look at the rape stubbles we had shot recently but go straight to a field we hadn,t even looked at yet

straight away we spotted birds flighting down a valley along a river bank that bordered the field and birds were cutting across the wind to the rape stubble after 10 mins of watching it became a continuous flightline almost non stop with a public footpath running the length of the field along the river bank we couldn't set up that side and that's were we really needed to be with the wind at our backs, so instead set up the other side of the field near a big oak tree with the wind blowing across the field were a weaker line was heading but knew we could pull some birds off the stronger line in front of us the rotary did the trick placing it upwind to our right of the decoys, aq few people walked up and down the footpath 150 yards in front of us but waited for them to clear the field before shooting again, we had the hushpower 20g with us so any that came into the decoys we could shoot them whilst they walked down the path tricky shooting with the wind being Channelled straight down the valley but managed to cobble a bag of 103 woodies and 1 feral, had we been able to shoot the furthest upwind side of the field we would be looking at a 200 plus bag but more than happy with the result, shot from 1.30pm till 6pm
