aga man
I unexpectedly got finish work early today, parts for a job had failed to arrive at the merchants [ what a shame! ]. I headed out at lunchtime checking various wheat stubbles for any pigeon activity. I struggled to fine any lines anywhere and no where looked very promising. Given the fact the stubbles are easy access and bales are there for ease of hide building, i decided to set up on a stubble that JDog and i had looked at last week. The stubble had birds down on it last week but there was nothing there at lunchtime today. I set up a hide using some bales pushed together and put up the magnet and a few deads on cradles. Things were slow to start but i managed a few decent shots on passing birds and started to build a pattern. My mate Tan rang me at 1.30pm and after i told him what i was up to, he also grabbed his gun and carts and joined me in another bale hide 40 metres away. We put out a second magnet and tried to make a busy looking pattern. It seemed to work and for a while birds decoyed very well from all directions. We killed a good few pigeons in the next 30 mins but also missed a few! Tan had problem with his magnet and had to change it for his turbo flapper which worked well. The sport was slow at times and hectic at others, some groups of young pigeons commited to the decoys from a great height which is always pleasing to see. By 4.30pm things slowed up and we just decoyed the odd passing bird. We called it a day at 5.30 and had a good pick up with my trusty labrador Tom. We didn't make the ton but picked up 74 pigeons and a Carrion crow.[ I sacrifised a decoying pigeon to take the Carrion.] Pigeons have been difficult to decoy here lately so this bag was very welcome. All the birds were killed with NSI prima shells in 1oz no7, which wer perfect for todays shooting.

marsh man
You done a good job moving those bales by yourself aga man and a very nice bag had by you and your mate , and not forgetting your dog who also played a part . I was out yesterday on some wheat stubble , managed to shoot 26 but didn't see that many about , what were about were well scattered as they finished the wheat down the marsh on Wednesday , so there is quite a lot of fresh stubble for them to work on . The young ones out numbered the old ens by 4 to 1 as I only got seven what you would call old , the rest were a decent size but this years birds .It could be the old ones are getting used to decoys or its a very good year for breeding . How did you find it up your way aga man ?
aga man
Yes, very much similar to you marsh man, a third of our bag today was young squabs with no white neck marks, many of the others had full colours but were still this years birds. I saw an adult woodpigeon carrying nest material on wednesday and i wouldn't mind betting it was making a nest for a third brood. I forgot to mention also that we had a lot of stock doves in the decoys today, not sure if that is significant but i don't recall seeing so many in recent years. Not sure why the decoying has been difficult, even with lots of young docile woodies from the town, they have seemingly been flying on high past the decoys and showing no interest, despite not having much shooting pressure. As for the bales, they are not full size, the Farmer makes them smaller for easier handling around the dairy Farm. Even the old man [JDog], can shift these ok. Having said that, i was blowing a bit today after shifting them!
marsh man
Thanks for that ........I don't know weather you had a magnet out or not ? , but I found I done slightly better with it turned off . I left one arm on facing the wind with a pigeon on it and took the other arm off , it was one of those days where the magnet was doing more harm than good . pigeon controller
Well done a cracking result, not managed to shoot today will report tomorrow . You must have seen some birds last week when you looked with JDog so the Intel is locked away for future reference which you proved today. We found birds on a field today and we know it will produce in the afternoon. You did the same , you set up on a field knowing the birds will arrive later on. This is a difficult process to explain to a novice shooter but is made up from Intel over the years . Once again well done on a good afternoon . Did you realy order the late parts or was it a clerical error?????
