Hull Imperial Game 28gms No 7 Fibre

Recommended Posts

They both kill Pheasants and Partridge well enough through my English side by side, choked I/C and 3/4 choke. As regards to opening them up to check shot size,..................................er NO ! Why bother ? If they fail to kill cleanly, I will stop using them. I switched to Hull after Gamebore 'revamped' their Pure Gold cartridges. I do not know what they changed, but they had altered them from the originals and they just did not kill the same. I tried the Hull cartridges and they did the job, so stuck with them.

Have to say that I prefer 5's and 6's though.

You have the best Partridge and early season Pheasant cartridge for my shooting with the Imperial game 28g 7s. Then 5s for late season Pheasants, very smooth and not to hard on older sxs guns. I'm now shooting the 26g imperial game as I like it a bit lighter through my old English game gun.

There is a thread on here somewhere by Johnnyoftheboy where all the cartridges have been chronographed with a normal gun. Makes interesting reading. As that's what we shooters use not a test barrel.

Switched to imperial game three years ago and its about the only brand i have ever been loyal to because its the only brand I've ever been really pleased with. I started with the 26 gram 6's which shot so smoothly through my english guns, really increased my confidence over a gamebore 30g loading i was using, I am now using the 28 gram 6's and they are equally fantastic from my experience i have dropped some very tall birds with them. I really ought to pattern them because it could all be in my head, but they do shoot nicely.

IMHO ....... If you've 3 years of positive experience and your confidence is sky high ..... I wouldn't pattern them.

Nothing to gain, and your mental confidence to lose .....

You are right there i think! Half the value of these cartridges is that confidence :)

Following everyone's comments, I've just ordered 500 of each for the SbS and the self loader so many thanks, All.. Not sure when they'll arrive at the RFD but there's no panic until I can hold and shoot the guns again. I will pattern both and post again then.

Used Hull High Pheasant for years, only changed to Eley High Pheasant and now Eley VIP High Pheasant when Hull raised the roof with the price. Would happily use them again.

Hull Imperials are a very smooth cartridge well suited to a lightweight SBS driven game gun. I have used them against driven partridges where they worked well, not the authority of the High Pheasant ( 30gr 5s) but dead is dead.

Collected them from the RFD. Have to say that the shot in the Imperials is as good as any I have ever seen and the pellet count is spot on as advertised. That in the High Pheasant is equally rounded and consistent and within a couple of pellets of that advertised but these have a matt finish as opposed to the polished look of those in the Imperial.

Just in case it is of any relevance and interest, with pheasant shooting looming I have recently patterned Hull High Pheasant no. 5s, 30 grams, through my Browning 325, 30 inch with Muller no.2 chokes (both barrels) at about 30 yards plus, and obtained, for me, astonishingly good results.

I use a metre square 'board' (actually two sheets of B and Q's best lining paper at £4 a roll), not the usual 30 inch area, because I like to see the destination of as many pieces of shot as possible. I use only two cartridges, on the same sheet of paper, per different cartridge and choke, because I'm parsimonious and also I find counting holes rather a sad occupation. A statistician would not be impressed by my method, but I have found it to be accurate enough in all the patterning I have done over the years. ( Why am I reasonably confident that I am not wasting my time and money on this limited exercise? Because I get appreciably different results from the same cartridges in different guns, and with different chokes in the same gun. Anyway, it is good enough for my purposes.) In this case, every single pellet from both cartridges - Hull state that there are 212 pellets in each cartridge of H.P. no. 5s, 30 grams - hit the paper. I have never had that happen before. In addition, the Mullers gave a very nice, even pattern, not too concentrated in the centre, which is what is claimed for them. Even a 30 inch circle superimposed on the sheet would have looked really good. For comparison, 445 pellets out of a theoretical maximum of 504 hit the paper when I patterned Hull 3 Crowns no.6s, 28 grams, same gun and chokes, and 603 out of a possible 768 using Hull Pro Fibre no. 8s, 24 grams, same gun and chokes. I conclude that in the latter two cases, many pellets went very wide or became deformed and useless before reaching the target, and that in the case of the no. 5s, the heavier, less numerous shot were perfectly matched to the gun and chokes.

Of course, for clay shooting I would use the Pro Fibres: with my poor aim I need all the pellets in the air that I can muster.

Just my two pennyworth. Your mileage may vary.

Although I can't vouch for the accuracy of their figures, I did get the velocity tables which Hull provide to match up if you take the given MV as V2.5.

In the Maxus which, with the 1/2 Teague, throws everything I've tried through it at 1/4. The High Pheasant was no different but the pattern quality was superb. As I only fired 7 shots, although I had no problem, it's pointless commenting on whether or not these 67mm cartridges will cycle consistently - I'll just have to wait and see.

In the little AyA, the 1/2 choke throws everything I've tried through it at the 1/2. However, with the Imperial it threw a tight Imp with another superb pattern quality. This wasn't really what I was hoping for so might just try again with the High Pheasant and also just assess the recoil.

However, it's easy to see why these two loads deserve the comments made in the above posts.

Just goes to show that there's nowt wrong with the old ways - if you want to change your choke, change your cartridge.

The High Pheasant (HP) shot 3/4 (64.5%). Previously, although the chokes were as mentioned, the central thickening was somewhat higher than the recognised norm. However, with the HP it was a little lower which has had the effect of increasing the effective shot pattern diameter. This is precisely what I was hoping for with the Imperial but the far more open pattern (52%) than that previously obtained put paid to that idea. If anything, the pattern thrown was even better and the recoil even with the 2 & 1/2" AyA chamber was not a problem. Now, whether it be the Maxus or the AyA I have every confidence that the pattern will hold up at the maximum range for the required pellet energy when necessary.
