If the animals are well cared for and kept mentally stimulated then fine, I have been to a few around the country and abroad where you see things you'd rather not ;)

I this day and age zoo's and wildlife parks probably provide some species only shot at survival so for that reason I think they serve a purpose. Ones run purely as a spectacle for the viewing public have no place and the animals should be donated to one which has their interests at heart.

Just my 2p's worth :good:

When I was a kid a trip to the zoo was a great day out, but now I'm older I see things in a different light.

To be honest I'd rather not see animals kept in artificial surroundings, purely so people can stand and gawk at them all day. There is plenty of interesting wildlife in the British countryside to keep me amused.

A lot of the animals in the UK zoos were born in them and not captured roaming free in the jungles and brought here.

In Kent we have Port Lympne (near me) which is a large zoo park and Howletts (near Canterbury) which is the same.

Both provide good environments for the animals and also have reintroduction programmes for the rarer species, like rhinos, gorillas etc.

I think most Zoo's nowadays do a lot of good work and research for the good of the animals.

We went on the annual pilgrimage to Colchester Zoo last week. We all enjoyed it and the kids love seeing the animals - though I miss the good old days when you could drive past the Zoo and see the elephants from the road - much cheaper :good:

One of the best zoos I've ever been to is Colchester. We took the kids years ago and found that they could see into virtually every enclosure, (not like London zoo). As a result we now have an annual trip and the kids (teens) still love it.

I agree about not seeing the elephants from the road, but the new feeding area is pretty good and more than makes up for it.

The best thing I ever saw at London zoo was a hedgehog wandering through one of the gardens - proper freedom :good:

Colchester for those who haven't been is really at the cutting edge of animal welfare and treatment. Every year they upgrade the enclosures and move the animals around to refurbish old enclosures. Anybody who has been there will tell you about the marvellous elephant enclosure or the African experience house.

Personally I have always liked Zoos and wild life parks, because without a doubt they are the real reason why so many species that are endangered are still with us.

As someone earlier said about Howletts and the Gorillas, Research and Breeding programmes are carried out and having gone to Thrigby last weekend (Small wildlife park), two of the animals in captivity there, have breed so successfully that they actually out number those left in the wild. :good::lol:

The old days where small enclosures and animals going mental due to boredom are long gone, and to those parks that carryout good work in captive breeding programmes, I say well done. Granted those animals would look better in their natural environment, but because they are in Zoo's and Parks, not just in Britain, but worldwide, they are still with us today and not just a picture in some book, such as the Dodo or more recently (1920's or 50's - I can't remember) the Tasmanian Tiger.

At the end of the day they, like us, look after animals and the environment, albeit in a different way. After all how many of us go out and shoot Pheasant and Partridge, which have been farm reared and then released for our sporting enjoyment. I don't believe that this is wrong and nor do I feel that Zoo's and Wildlife Parks are wrong to try and maintain the life of endangered species on our planet, whose decline has been caused by us, MAN.

SS
