Rogue Lamper

As I've mentioned in my introduction, my Girlfriend's parents are farmers, and no-one besides her dad, me and a friend of his shoot over the land, no-one else has permission to.

The other day their neighbour said his daughter was up in the night between 1am and 2am and saw someone lamping on the field belonging to my Girlfriends parents adjacent to the neighbours house.

Now, it wasn't any of us that shoot on their land, so what would you guys suggest doing?

The field in question is over 17 acres, next to a road and usually has a gate open on to the road.

Another factor is, they have a neighbour less than a mile away who rears pheasants, shoots anything/everything that moves and is/has been known to poach/shoot over ground without permission. We have seen him trying to take a party of people on to their ground last year, and after some brief words from my girlfriend he went.

So basically what course of action would you take?

Was there any sign of damage or even a lamper's presence? Spent rounds, footprints, tyre marks etc? I would probably go and visit the neighbour ask him if he has had a similiar problem and mention that you are going to be reporting it while also keeping an eye out overnight and that if it was someone local they should have asked for permission. That way he is either likely to own up or stay well clear.

If it is not him then he may be able to shed some light on potential culprits or known times they visit. That way you can catch them in the act and should they be carrying a SG or FAC weapon then bye bye cert. Also, although its an inconvience get the gate locked overnight, it will make life more difficult for them and require them to either leave their vehicle visible off your land or make noise breaking the lock etc. Also, place some signs on the gate "private land" "land shot over" etc etc.

Thats about all you can do for now. Then just play wait and see, thats likely to deter most if not then take further, more serious action.

Hope that helps,

Dan

What's with the covert operations? The guy is trespassing on someone's land with a firearm!! Call the police! If the guy is spotted by the neighbour again then make sure they contact someone immediately so you can call the police and have them dealt with. Sounds bloody dangerous to me to do anything less.

Sorry Markio, I left that out but thought it would be fairly obvious to call the police IF he is sighted again! The problem is that he was only seen on the off chance as his daughter was up in the night. I would do all of what I have said in order to make it unlikely that he even bothered to turn up again. I wouldn't just wait and hope someone saw him again then call the police, I would take the above measures to ensure it doesn't get to that stage. Anyway thats my view.

just be careful what you do as if the lad or lads who are poaching are a bad bunch it could bring trouble to your door i know lads who where lamping on land without permisson the farmer called the police and when the police arrived and caught them 2 of the lads had there guns taken off them and had there FAC revoked but several nites later the farmer had all his cars , tractors sheds etc set on fire not hard to know who was involved , this farmer suffered years of torment gates left open and cows and sheep left to run onto the roads into other crop fields etc fence cut down all other sorts of things ,so just be careful what way you handle it :good:

Sad to say but thats what normally follows, its not a new thing either, historically some form of retribution is always suffered by the resident landowner if he protests or even takes the law into his own hands, it is far wiser to let the police deal with it and stand back.

I `m just amazed this kind of thing happens and people are willing to let it continue. Sometimes things just need sorting whatever the possible outcome just for some self respect.

Hold on a minute...who said they saw a firearm??? Lamp maybe but what else did they see, if anything. Check out the facts before getting on your high horses. It might just have been a dog owner looking for a runaway or somesuch thing. Talk to them that saw about what they saw then make a judgement about what to do.

What I thought, hence why I asked whether any evidence of a shooter etc. Also I don't see why everyone says phone the police and forget about it, surely it would make sense to lock the gates, speak to locals and even place signs ups? Not taking preventive actions first and just sitting around waiting, is what could make the difference between the antis winning & losing.

... and if it is just some bloke with a dog and the dog gets a nail through its foot?

If it's well away from a public footpath and there's a private property notice on the gate, hard luck! That's my view anyway. It's just an old bit of fence that was dropped there, total accident :sly:

Regardless of what the human element might choose to do, the dog he had with him knows nothing of permission. Wouldn't like to see anyone's dog hurt, it doesn't know any better and is just doing its masters bidding..

I would not jump to the conclusion that this was shooting.

I saw someone lamping on one of my permissions one night.

I had this funny sensation of being illuminated (from some distance) as I got out of the car, and got my gear ready, and then I looked over the fields and realised what was going on. The chap had a dog and did not appear to be shooting. He did not have permission. I flicked my own lamp on & off and walked in his direction and he scarpered.

All the same I would not have persisted in approaching him if he had stood his ground.

Another good reason for having the mobile phone when out & about.

Putting word about that you are keeping an eye out could be good, but could also alert others to the fact that there's some sport to be had. You can't be out there all the time.
