propercartridges
well people as per the title whats the secret I know of graphite and alliminumn powder to polish lead shot any trade secrets out there thanks george
sitsinhedges
Put raw shot in a clean cement mixer with graphite and they will come out looking like black pearls. That said I think diamond shot is a marketing gimmick with no substance.
Milo
Having patterned and used in the field quite a wide range of cartridges through full chokes I found that in a 32 gramme fibre load Gamebore Black Gold patterned best but that RC SIPE definitely killed best at ranges past about 40 yards. I have never understood what makes the SIPEs so much more lethal than anything else I used through my heavily choked trap gun but I have no doubt about it. RC shots sizes are in european were as Gamebore are in UK so your about half a size bigger with the RC's which may explain their lethality. figgy
George I've seen the big bags of shot in your factory, why polish it it's shiny anyway.
johnnytheboy
I thought diamond shot was a marketing gimmick, saving money putting graphite powder on it crafty old gamebore

propercartridges
no ive some ali powder coming will try a bit of that also just orderd in my lorry a couple of ton at 3% instead of 2% wat I normaly buy so to try it myself its not a lot more but the 5 is to hard good for long range clays but on a tower I used to shoot 5% and I can show you clays with holes clean through and not broke the clay that might have cost someone a big prize so I am going to do some 3% with ally powder see you thanks george

BrowningB525
So what will the 3% do that the 5% won't? Deform a little on impact giving up its energy. Isn't aluminium powder explosive? I recall it being used in munitions or fireworks or some such thing It can burn (think thermite)

TIGHTCHOKE
Isn't aluminium powder explosive? I recall it being used in munitions or fireworks or some such thing It is used to generate colours in fireworks along with other metallic powders. Yes it can burn very fiercely at over 600 degrees C George 3% antimony will be great as an all rounder. chris1961
Aluminum powder will burn but the temp it needs to ignite it is very high even when it is mixed with the other part to make fermite you have to light it with magnesium ribbon with a blow torch so I would say it is safe to use as a polishing medium
Guest cookoff013
Ally can oxidise. That's why aluminium powder is used in the thermite reaction. It easily accepts the oxygen from the iron oxide. Forming iron an aluminium oxide..
propercartridges
thanks cooky so is ally powder good for polishing lead shot and has any readers on here used it??
figgy
Try it George on a small batch. To be honest lead shot on its own will polish by rubbing together. If this alli powder burns like some say I'd be carful of using it on shot as the residue may ignite on firing the cartridge causing the shot to fuse. Farma Geddon
Can't say I have worried about shot giving up its energy on live quarry. Very happy with how steel shot kills and I would certainly buy 5% ant lead shot. Many years ago now I bought some Italian 6 % shot and it killed duck beautifully with just an ounce. BrowningB525
You just have to love the stuff people fall for. I wasn't saying that it was a risk. sitsinhedges
Just happened to come across this re aluminium powder burning (and some other rather questionable but nonetheless interesting videos by the same poster ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rcrHotYico Edited October 21, 2015 by sitsinhedges

It does on clays. Probably less so on animals.

Hamster
I don't believe it. You'd expect there to be at least one believable test but there isn't either on clays or game. Edited October 21, 2015 by Hamster
