Gunman
Just had my 12 year old Astra MOT'ed. Technically it failed due to a dud tail light but apart from that no problem . Bought it 5 years ago with 61,000 miles on the clock and its done another 74,000 . Maintained as and when required and regular oil changes . When I think back to how cars were when I started driving in 1968 its nice to know that some things are better made , shame other things aren't and are made non repairable . subsonicnat
4 wheels and a drive train, they used to be. Now sadly they want to own the car and you for its life. Sad day when they got all tecnical, deliberate in my opinion.. Imagine when the cars are almost Total Battery and Electronics.. Makes me Squirm mate.. There are quite a few out on the roads now, my boss has a Nissan Leaf and I have to say it is very impressive when you spin the wheels going through the automatic gearbox. The range isn't that great if you drive it like Sterling Moss, but 120 miles on a £1.80 charge is very reasonable motoring.

When Battery is 80% of the cost of the car, and you would Not be able to Work on Electronics, Eh.?.
peck
40 years ago i used to drive an Escort, had to regularly top up the oil, it would use a pint every 3000 miles. The last works vehicle i had was a Peugeot Partner van, never once did i have to top the oil up between services. At, I believe, 5k to replace the batteries after a certain amount of years, then I don't think I'll be buying one soon. Although the amount you save on fuel would definitely pay for the replacement. Lord Geordie
With the Leaf you LEASE the battery, you don't own it. As for older cars! I had a Rickman ranger, running mk2 escort 1.3 engine and 4 speed box! Never once let my down! Looking at the ford KA 1.3 other than the electric ignition etc it looks the same lump as they used back in the late 60s through! My 1996 Astra 1.4 16v did near 400.000 before giving up! Granted it had a few items done! Clutch twice, plugs and leads, brake calliper, both cylinders, pads disks drums shoes, wheel bearings etc but nothing major! Now have a little Wagon R 1.3 that's passed 102.000 and still going.

Yes it's the same engine and that's the problem the fact back then emissions didn't matter. Mechanic told me their was nothing they could do to it

The manual on my last t5 states a litre every 3000 miles is normal. I called it 2 stroke in the vw centre and they giggled. It pushes passed the turbo and burns
Fuji Shooter
We own 3 classics 1970 Beetle 1300 1984 Austin Mini 1000 1978 Series Land Rover You can fix any of them on a Saturday morning with a handful of tools. I open the bonnet on my twin turbo Jag and weep sometimes.
Dave-G
My Galaxy needs the tiptronic gearbox reconditioning every 70K or so - and a solenoid is often needed, totalling a 2K spend every two years or so on the gearbox alone. The service chap has advised me that all the modern electric/hybrid/engine stop-start cars are now keeping him very busy in repairs.
Pistol p
She's Just past the MOT for the third year in a row. Well, the n/s rear bearing could do with adjustment for next year but other than that I love it.

Del T
Wish I had stashed away my Delta Integrale many moons ago. Yes another classic. The evo 2 intergrales are going for silly money. Some are coming in from Japan and you could eat your dinner off the underside due to their weather and no salt put on the roads. They are immaculate. Also another car that's leapt over 10k in value (this year alone!) is the Mitsubishi evo 6 tommi makkinen in red. Now people are getting 20k plus for clean examples. Only a few years ago these were 9-12k! If only my evo 4 went up in value like that. :-(
amateur
Wish I had stashed away my Delta Integrale many moons ago. It would just be a pile of rust, like all the others, by now
Fuji Shooter
It would just be a pile of rust, like all the others, by now Probably true. I saw my old company car Sierra Cosworth 500 for sale last year that I had from new in 1987 - they want nearly 45K for it. Need a time machine
