davids3511
I've just received my shotgun cert so a total newbie and my son is after his first gun for Christmas. The budget is £500 at a stretch so Beretta, Browning and Miroku's are out. I've seen a 1 year old Lincoln premier (20g) for £500. Would that fit the bill? He will only be shooting sporting clays and he doesn't want a semi-auto or pump. Also, as they come with a 3 year warranty , does anyone know if it's transferable to the new owner? Cheers in advance. Westley
To be fair you could be better off with an older Beretta or Miroku, they are available within your budget and you are far less likely to need ANY warranty. Stick with 26" or 28" barrels and 21 or 24 gram cartridges, Eley Firsts or Hull Comp X. You will have a much better choice of cartridges in 12 bore and they will be cheaper too. He can always up the cartridge load as he develops (if he thinks there is a need !). I would suggest fitting an Isis green recoil pad after you have decided upon the correct stock length, they do work and stop a lot of recoil 'bounce'. Will Poon
There's plenty berettas, Brownings and miroku's in the £500 mark in guntrader.
dougall
bought my son the exact gun...it is a great choice for your budget...bit sharp on the edges and not as refined as the others you mention but I actually regret chopping it in a few years back! I am not sure about the warranty but to my eyes it is rare/unlikely that anything major will/can go wrong as it is solidly built/reliable and for £500 not worth sweating. It is the gun I would recommend to anyone not wanting to go silver pigeon prices...so go for it. You will not forget his face when he opens it either.....all best. Scully
Try the Lincoln Jubilee Prestige in 12 bore with WIDE OPEN chokes. There's nothing like smoking those first few clays to install confidence. You may even find a Miroku within your budget. Failing that try 101 Winchesters in that price range, again, get those open chokes in. As others have said, GT is your friend. It's better than porn. Interesting one here https://www.guntrader.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Winchester_Shotgun_PIGEON-GRADE-SKEET_For-Sale_151017093206001 25" barrels, skeet and skeet and a nice bit of wood too. If I had the spare cash I`d be tempted myself.

WelshAndy
At 14 I'd say 12 bore over 20. My 11 year old has just started with a 12.....
Danger-Mouse
it is a 12 GAUGE AND OP IS AFTER A 20G........... Nowhere in the OP does it say he is after a 20g. It say`s he`s seen one and asks for an opinion about it, that`s all. The thread is asking for advice on a gun for a 14 year old. Depending on his size he may be fine with a 12g. eddoakley
Why not get a £200 12g and use light loads to see if he gets the use out of it? I wouldn't worry about a "brand name" for a starter and more about fit. At £200 you should never really lose any money. If the first one isn't right it's always fun chopping and changing until you find the right gun (or several in many cases). If he doesn't get into it a cheap gun is always going to be worth just about what you pay for it. I have a couple of sub £200 single trigger o/u that I have probably owned half a dozen times. People buy them as a starter, get into the sport and decide they want something shinier or find some more cash or they realise that it's not for them so bring it back to me. Are we talking baikal at the like? Im worried about faults and reliability in a gun in that price bracket. The Lincoln is only a year old. Cawdor118
My old man started me at 10 with a 12g beretta 686 silver pigeon special that he got around that price... I still have it. In fact I was shooting it today. Remember "quality fears no time". All the best to your loon, he's a lucky kid.
Danger-Mouse
......he did not ask should he get a 20/12g.......... "Need starter clay gun for 14 yar old boy - Budget £500" No specifics other than a price range. And then in the OP that he wants a o&u. A suggestion for either gauge is perfectly fine. MAB1954
My 13 year old shoots a single barrel 12g Baikal with 21 gram loads just fine, the Baikal has a recoil pad fitted but that's all. If your son is average size I would go for a 12g but don't get an o/u that's to heavy for him to swing or does not fit. My son now wants a 12g sxs so some nice good bargains because they are out of fashion. Good luck you need to find a good gun shop local to you. Westley
Wont they be ancient at those prices though? I have a Westley Richards that is pushing 100 and still going strong. Age is no problem, condition certainly is.
