grrclark
I say the same thing to everyone buying a laptop, do you use it for anything offline or is it all predominantly internet based stuff? If it is the latter then look at a Chromebook, cheap as chips, super quick to start up, no issues with Windows updates and all the usual horrors that comes with Microsoft. viking
nothing offline at all, all i need is a bit of storage for photos and a disc drive, around 15" screen, was looking at this http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-15-af155sa-15-6-laptop-blue-10137877-pdt.html

grrclark
If all online then seriously think about the Chromebook, all your photos can be stored in the Google cloud and although that may make you feel nervous it is way more robust than on a hard disc in a laptop. Use the Google docs for any letter writing, etc. Almost every bit of software that you may want to use is available as a service online, so no need to keep up to date, etc it is all done for you. No virus worries either. A Chromebook isn't for everyone, but if you have a decent broadband speed then it can be a brilliant solution. There are Microsoft equivalents too if you have a masochistic desire. Do a bit of online reading, it might be something that works for you and it gives you options. The laptop you are looking at will be fine too if that is what you want
secretagentmole
The do not all have Windows 10, chances are most will have Windows 8 or 8.1 and you can upgrade to 10. All 10 really seems to be is a Windows 8.2!
Gordon R
Viking - I changed to Windows 10 some months ago. For two days, I tried to uninstall it and gave up. Kept getting warnings about losing files, which I had never heard of. Now, I think it is a definite improvement on Windows 8 series. Easy to use, in answer to your question. Its A lot like GOOGLE, When they can tell you more about yourself than you know, it will RUN Windows. Its All about Snooping, simply that,, Thats why They give it you.. There's a lot of people on-line offering laptops with Windows 7 installed, knowing just how popular Windows 8 & 10 are. Having said that, I installed 10 on a none-too-quick notebook and it's running OK. My pal, however, had an absolute nightmare and ended up having to have his main business computer returned to his local expert for reversion to 7. I have still to take the plunge with my main house and business computers, both of which run on 7.
MrM
I run 10 on my tablet - personally a great improvement over Win 8 IMO - but am keeping Win 7 on laptop. You can go in and turn off all the things that send information back to Microsoft!
Alpha Mule
I work for an IT support company and we recommend that no-one upgrades to 10. At least wait until Service Pack 1 is out (That is a general rule of thumb for any MS 'upgrade').
