dead eye alan
Had a call from farmer saying pigeons all over his rape, went to look Friday at 1ish sure enough 200-300 gorging them self, but not much joining them. So got their this morning at 8ish 100 got up as I walked over to the feeding spot set up but everything was wrong! Wind in my face sun in my eyes. Waited and waited and waited only 2 returned and too far out to shoot got home at 1.30 after not firing a shot. Seems very difficult this winter to get a bag of any sort, well never mind a bit of cold weather may improve things, merry Christmas to you all and happy new year. lakeside1000
Bin there done it, its the same with all hunting and fishing, some days your 'on' and other days its definitely 'off' but its always the expectation of a good day that draws you back, not the memories of long boring sessions, try going after pinkfoot geese, you wait for hours then they all come at once but so high you need anti aircraft shells to get near them, but it doesn't stop me being there every chance I get just in case they decide to come in range, the reward for hours of patience is the time they start coming and never seem to stop, I have some great memories of spring drilling's and autumn harvest times on pigeons when you think they will never stop coming, and as the light starts to go watching them go to roost and wishing there were just a few more hours of light left, great days, thats why we love it so much. sitsinhedges
Winter rape shooting can be so frustrating, things look so promising but they don't play ball and the farmer wonders why you're not out there shooting them

rbrowning2
May not get a bag but keep the farmer happy and reap the reward in the spring and summer and any day out is better than a day in.

It's so warm that, although they are on rape, their heart isn't in it. They are not really hungry and it's a sort of "take it or leave it" situation. The rape is tall and healthy. As soon as a farmer sees more than 20 birds landing in the wheel marks, he's putting out a few flags or streamers. plus the odd gas gun. In a "normal" year, this would make very little difference but this year, these small measures seem to be very effective. Instead of just landing in a different part of the field, they are gone forever. Depressing....

dad
me and my mate are shooting a large field of rape once a week and we allways put about a 1000 off, the area on top of the hill seems to be favourite they have eaten the rape to ground level there, my mate watches the field regulary and they pour out of a 130 acre wood 500yds away to the top of the hill all the time so my mate sets up there and he can see the wood from there too, i go further up the field behind a tall hedge with my back to the wood, when i set up i cant see the wood my mate can, we have shot it 6 times so far he has hardly had any shooting on sunday he shot at 3 pigeons i shot at 25 and had hundreds over me that i couldnt stop with deeks, coming from behind and wind up their bums they get too much time too see all is not right but some turn and come back. the way they change their line from the top of the hill when we go there makes me think they watch my mate set up they cant see me behind the tall hedge.
