Strange Evening

I was out at one of my perms this evening, thinking , 'ok it as black as ink tonight', its warm (11 degrees) , a gentle breeze, so should be ideal out on the

equestrian centre paddocks (30+ acres). Normally , there's always a good few about , as I don't hammer the venue , just do a little and often.

Well, not a rabbit to be seen within range of the AA S410 .177. Nothing at all , which is extremely strange for that place.

As I was crossing one of the largest paddocks , I had a weird feeling ( you know when you get the hairs on the back of your neck standing up)?

There was this bloke in a high vis jacket walking straight towards me from behind, me a good 500 mtrs from the nearest public footpath/road!

I spun around with my spare torch, and told him to stand still, and explain what he was doing there.

"i'm looking for my dog" he said , I asked, why he had not been calling the dog , and what was the dogs name?

After too long thinking to be true, 'bobby' he said. All the time i had to stop him from closing in on me.

I shone my white cree torch on him but I never pointed the red light on the rifle at him.

So i told him he must leave immediately , as he was on private property and there were another two shooters nearby accompanying me .(not true).

He reluctantly made his way back across the very muddy paddock , with me remaining some 50 mtrs behind him.

When he got to the road, just where i park he legged it (ran off)!

He had a small pack on his back , a hoody on under the high vis, with the hood up, and i would say he was not a youth !

I just cant think what he was up to?????? I packed my stuff away into the car pretty smartish , keeping my hazel , shooting stick to hand.

I rang plod, (not interested),,and txt'd the landowner , who said he would " keep an eye out".

I just needed to share this experience, as I am still a bit 'troubled'/puzzled as to what the ??????

Thoughts anyone?

Jogger or walker. Over the years I have had several experiences like this. Seems people just go out at night and use the cover of darkness to go anywhere they want. Most of the time they must get away with it. Some I have seen have had dogs with them and others haven't. One was in full jogging kit - shorts etc.

I love being out in the dark and it seems other do tool

That's what I cannot figure , theft yes , but in Hi Viz.? Lost dog , yes but no calling , whistle ?

Nutter or, under the influence ? I think that's what I will have to put it down to.

my guess? the hi-viz gives him an excuse if he's approached before he can get cracking on nicking stuff. have a look round first looking for your mythical lost dog, as soon as you're sure no one is going to see and approach you, off comes the hi viz and he can get on with his thieving.

unnerving experience for you though

Longbower I had the sort of the same thing happen to me today just as the light was fading I saw two people with hivis's walking straight up the hill towards me I waited until I could see properly and lucky enough they were two people having a walk but the farmer has trouble with the gypsies so I always keep my eyes open and my phone charged but it does sound funny him running off without his dog

Got to be wary of conspiracy theory here. People walk on land for all sorts of reasons. They enjoy it and know that trespass in not a criminal offence in England. They are on a nostalgic trip back to where they spent their childhood and the like. They want to recce a job they are applying for - forestry work, drainage, etc. They are looking for mistletoe or holly or slows or whatever. They are looking for their dog, cat, hamster, whatever. They are taking a shortcut - explains this bloke running as if he was in a hurry.

Most of the population never even consider the shooting side of things. To us it is a 'permission' - To them it is just fields and woods.

Now if you see the same bloke in the same block of land on a regular basis then it becomes a bit different.
