treetree
Well I shot a pump for the first time, and thought it was brilliant. So much so I'm going to get one. I just have a question about barrel length, as I've read a few comments about how they can seem excessively long. So what's the best barrel length? I'm looking for the gun to be my go to all rounder. Many thanks
impala59
Probably 26" - 28" multi choke for all rounder, 24" is minimum length permitted, check on the Pump Club thread there is all sorts of useful info there
Kev12g
I like 28 inch barrels. 28 inch multi choke will be fine. Once had 30 inch barrel wich had extended choke man that was like waving big stick
kenholland
26 inch with 1/2 choke will do me over decoy's no problem. remy 870 wingmaster love it .
treetree
Thanks all, was using the hatsan fieldhuntet so reckon I'll stick with that as seems good value at the price. Will either be 26 or 28 inch barrel. I'll check out the pump club. Thanks again
throdgrain
It depends on the length of the action. A 26" barrel is perfect on a Wingmaster, whereas on a SuperNova I prefer a 24".
MAB1954
I have a Mossberg 500 with 24" multi choke barrel plus the original 28" fix choke barrel. Covers a lot but not steel loads.
Rimfireboy
24" on my supernova, I wouldn't want it any longer really.
kent
just remember break actions have shorter actions to add in behind the barrels 36" barrels are ridiculous for a break action in general use but that could be your effective length Action plus barrel in a pump or semi
TIGHTCHOKE
Glad I changed from a 30" barrel to the 24" I use now!
Wingman
Would a pump gun fit into a breakdown gun cabinet?
treetree
Thanks for your replies. So are the any benefits of a 28 inch over a 24 inch where pumps are concerned? Or is 26 a good compromise. Looking to order in next day or so do need to get it right!
impala59
I have a 28" Browning and a 28" Ithaca, they feel totally different. One is ribbed the other plain barrelled. They swing very differently. On the face of it they are very similar, both pump action bottom eject. If you can, I would counsel trying a few to see how they fit and feel for you. If, as you said you are going for the Hatsan, try and handle the different barrel lengths for the weight and feel. With multichoke the shot pattern will change fairly marginally between 24" and 28"
saddler
Would a pump gun fit into a breakdown gun cabinet? May do, or not, depending on action/mag tube length. I'd say most would fit if the cabinet is made to take any common barrel length.
sportsbob
The 28" is closer to 29" with the choke fitted, you will find it tight in some cabinets and some slips as the extra 7 inches or so for the action makes it a long gun overall. I have a 26" but would like a 24" multichoke but they are a little hard to come by.
Guest cookoff013
i`ve got 28" but i wouldnt half want a 24..... i bought a benelli s/a in a 30". still nice to handle.
arm3000gt
I have recently purchased a Hastan field hunter with 24" barrel. It is almost identical in length to my Browning 525 with 28" if that is any help. Hatsan also to a screw in 4" barrel extender so if you find 24" too short you increase the barrel length that way. treetree
Thanks all. Opted for a 26 in the end. Just a few days to wait now until she arrives
