WelshMike
I have been working away a fair bit more then normal this year so havent been out shooting as much as I would have liked. After a 2 week stint on site I fancied getting out with the shotgun. I popped to one farm on Friday on the way home from work to see what was about. There were a few crows on a field recently sprayed with slurry so I thought it was worth a try in the morning. I got up at 5.30 and headed off to the field to get set up before first light. It was a lovely crisp morning and I was content just to be out. A few crows came in and left unscathed due to some poor shooting to start off with but I was happy being out and getting a few shots. Due to the set up (buildings, power lines and houses) most were coming into the pattern from behind me which made for some great sport. I finished a three hour stint with 30 mixed blacks (mainly carrions and rooks) and a magpie. Not great numbers but an enjoyable morning. I also needed to get out after the foxes as I had a few calls whilst I was away. The first call was from a mate who had a farm down the road that had seen a "huge" fox around the lambing sheds and was none to happy. Popped up to his place for a brew and then off we set. Parked up in the yard and headed off to a likely spot (new ground to me so I didnt have a clue where we were off to). Into the first field, along the top of the bank, quick flick of the lamp was met with some eye shine but not very bright so I thought maybe a badger. Checked with the NV and couldnt see anything, quick squeak and another flicker of eyes...back to the NV, fox in the middle of the field. Laydown and sent an 80 grain soft point away. I am ashamed to say that the shot didnt connect where I wanted and caught the fox a little low in the chest meaning he made a quick dash before a second round finished him off. Nice big fox in excellent nick, 5 minutes in , job done. In a lot of ways I am glad that it isnt always that easy but the farmer and my mate are well chuffed. Carried on round the next farm, nothing so headed to another farm just down the road from home. Parked up and walked 50 yards along the track, flash of eyes in the field, over to the NV and could see a fox sat in the field behind a large hedge. It knew I was there as it was a still night and no amount of squeaking over the next 5 mins would move it. I think it got bored and headed off giving me a clear shot at around the 150 yard mark. One last squeak stopped her and she fell to a chest shot. The pic is a little messy as due to the angle of the shot it did a fair bit of internal damage. All in all a great day and proves how much I love shooting. Thanks for reading
