Fourten speed test.

Recommended Posts

Well, just found time today to scratch together a few different fourten carts to throw across the chrono. Did an average from three of each type that I had. Reading at roughly six feet from the muzzle from a 24:1/2 inch barrel. Here's the results if anybody's interested.

Eley Fouten 2" #6 = 961fps.

Eley Fourlong 2:1/2" #7 12.5 grm =746fps.

Lyalvale 2:1/2" #9. 14grm =1182fps.

Fiocchi 2:1/2" #4 11grm. =1272fps.

Eley 3" Subsonic #6. 18grm. =983fps.

Eley extralong #6 magnum 18grm. =1210fps.

746fps for the fourlong 2 1/2"? Seems very odd.

I agree . Eley has them dowm at

325mtps

Just wondering if the chrono is picking up the wad ?

I can just spot on the boxes that the fourlong are fibre wad , fibre wads are notorious for not giving correct chrono readings

It would not make any sense at all that they are slower than the subsonics.

Thanks for posting interesting info, this what i have suspected for some time with the .410s and the subsonics.

No more shocks on claimed speeds than in bigger ga guns, So glad i reload for most of my ammo, its the only way you know what you are getting everytime.

So far I have also found the Fourlong 2.5" the quietest though the Lyalvale Express 3" #5 magnasonics were not far behind.

I will have to get some more Eley Magnum Subsonics to compare as its been a while since I had any stock locally. Most places don't seem to keep 410 Subsonics near me :(

One thing I did notice though is that the Lyalvale 5's had a tighter pattern and did a lot more damage than the Fourlong 6's which seemed a bit hit and miss. This was just a rough test with a couple of lager cans (rabbit size target?) I found in the hedge at about 20 yards but the Fourlongs only just peppered them where the Express magnums ripped them to shreds with a lot more on target. I've got quite a few more 410 cartridges to test and wish I could help out as there doesn't seem to be much info on 410 speeds.

The other day I got a couple of boxes of gamebore .410 in 2" & 3" from Ivan at c h Weston's. Mainly just to try over the chrono. I also dug out a box of lyalvale supreme game, 2:1/2" .410's of 14 grm subsonic that I'd forgotten about. Here's the results, three shots with each type.

Lyalvale subsonic 2:1/2" 14grm #6 = 883-893-906 fps.

Gamebore 3" 16grm #7 = 1161-1152-1159 fps.

Gamebore 2" 9grm #6 = 1141-1148-1119 fps.

I recently bought a couple of boxes of Lyalvale 2.5" 14g #7 that I haven't tried yet.

I presumed they were not subsonic as they don't mention it on the packaging but then neither do the Eley Fourlongs which I wanted to compare them against.

What packaging are they in?

Lyalvale's website seems very confusing and doesn't seem to list all their 410 cartridges.

The 2.5" ones I have are in the Lyalvale black, white and red box.

The 3" 17g #5 magnum ones are in orange and black boxes branded with Lyalvale Express Supreme Game but with a sticker on them saying "Magnasonic".

I can't seem to find any Lyalvale 2.5" subsonics for sale anywhere and they aren't mentioned on their website.

But then again, they don't seem to show any of their Supreme Game 410's either!

Confused!

I think Magnasonic is Lyalvale speak for subsonic. It is for their trainer clay loads anyhow.

Yes it is.

The only Lyalvale subsonic ones I have seen anywhere are the 3" 17g #5 shot which I got a slab of last month.

I thought that is the only size they did in subsonic.

Depending on actual speed, some of their 2.5" ones might be subsonic though, like the Eley Fourlong.

Wish I could test them myself but I only have a cheap barrel mounted airgun chrono.

I got a nice quick reply from Lyalvale -

Dear Chris,

We are going through quite a few product changes and the 410 range now consists of

2" 9grm no 6 and 9 Fibre wad
2 1/2" 14 gram no 5, 6 7 & 9 Fibre wad
3" 16 gram no 5 & 6 Fibre wad
3" Subsonic 17 gram no 5 Fibre wad

Currently with exception to the 2" all are branded Supreme Game with a transition currently on the 2" to Supreme and fibre wad across the range.
We haven’t ever produced a 2 1/2" subsonic, the new subsonic round called Magnasonic is the best Hushpower say they have used in their guns for noise suppression.

Kindest regards

Marcus

Hmm, I wonder if lyalvale have a chrono?

It makes you wonder.

The Eley Fourten are way under speed so I'm sure others are.

Just looked at the Eley 2.5" #7 and 3" #6 subsonics that I got delivered this morning and they are no longer crimped and have a roll top and card now.

They seem to change things all the time!

Chris,

What do you mean as it's not really clear?

"Way under speed" for your needs or as compared with their specification? Should it be the latter, Rimfire's figure reflects that they're just 2m/s ish short of their 300.
