bullet1747
Evening Put in a variation for 243 , had a chat with fire arms today and they say land is cleared for that calibre and have I thought about 222 instead , just want to ask for your opinions on both
drut
.222 is a very sweet calibre + easy to reload for..243 has longer legs, better in wind + more thump and deer legal. For my needs I picked .222 but it all depends on your needs/land. robbiep
Depends what you're going to be shooting really. The big plus point for 243 is that it's a deer legal calibre.
ShootingEgg
Both good calibres but then as said 243 = deer
bullet1747
Funny you all say deer , on my chat yesterday I was told 222 was ok for muntjac , take it these are classed as vermin
SimpleSimon
Funny you all say deer , on my chat yesterday I was told 222 was ok for muntjac , take it these are classed as vermin No, they're still covered by the laws of the deer act and best practice recommendations, etc for deer. But they and Chinese Water Deer are subject to lower minimum calibre requirements in England and Wales (.220, 1000lbs muzzle energy and a 50gr bullet)
TONY R
.243 well its deer legal and every one and his dog has one, i dont want to coment any further they are so exiting. Now .222 What a fantastic little round inherantly accurate economical to load and deer legal for the odd trip over the border for a roe. A well compitent little round saddly overshadowed by the sheer weight of numbers of .223s. But none the less the .222 is a winner and in the days before the .223 it won many benchrest comps with its pressision accuracy. .223s have probably won more bbench rest comps world wide than the .222 now, but thats down to sheer volume of .223s rather than out and out accuracy, which i personaly think goes to the .222. robbiep
Funny you all say deer , on my chat yesterday I was told 222 was ok for muntjac , take it these are classed as vermin As Simon has said, the 222 is legal for muntjac and CWD in England and wales. Bullet weight must be 50 grains or greater. Tony R states that the 222 is 'roe-legal' in Scotland. Yes, it is. But not legal for use on any other deer. So a 222 would greatly limit what you could shoot. Whereas a 243 is legal for all deer in the British Isles - though for Scotland, you do need to be shooting a bullet of 100 grains or more. It all depends on what you want it for, really. If it'll only be used for fox / CWD / muntjac, then yes, the 222 is suitable. If, however, you want to do other deer stalking, now or in the future, then the 243 is far more versatile.

Dougy
243 loaded with 58 grn for fox and 100 grn for all UK Deer. That's you're best option really if you ever wanted to take up stalking.

TIDES EDGE
As I said before .243 100 grain will kill foxes and anything else and you dont have to re zero find a make that suits your rifle and buy as many as you can from the same batch this also saves re zeroing .
