Alarming one room of house

Recommended Posts

Have just been informed by my force that i need to have an alarm on my property now (or just the room where guns are kept.) id rathenot alarm the whole house as i honestly dont see an alarm as a deterant these days. So dont really want to buy a full blown kit. Anybody know of a kit that would do just one/two rooms of a house rather than loads of pir's and door sensors that id never use

I would take advice from BASC if you are a member as I do not think they can insist you have an alarm fitted.

Depending on local crime rate, number of firearms, perceived level of risk, how often the house is unoccupied, etc. the police can view the risk level as 1, 2 or 3, and require varying levels of security.

The police firearms security handbook is here : https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/117636/firearms-security-handbook.pdf

In addition, the Home Office licencing handbook : https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/518193/Guidance_on_Firearms_Licensing_Law_April_2016_v20.pdf pages 173-176 in particular.

Do bear in mind that intruder alarms have a British Standard (BS4737, I think). If you are fitting an alarm, do make sure it complies with that, to save the possibility of having to take it out and do it again !

Did they specify the level of alarm they want? You don't want to fit anything and they then say it isn't good enough.

Do you need to have a RedCare contract?

Did they say it's a must or a nice to have?

Loads of alarms on the market to suit every pocket, you need to ensure you get one they approve of.

Wont get my variation back until i have an alarm fitted. And only have to alarm the room the firearms are in.. I have been over the magic number for 2 years without them noticing. So best get one in... Just need a 1 room setup...

can you put a landline in that room ?

You can buy an auto dial alarm (freestanding) and set it to ring your mobile for under £20.

I have one in my gunroom and it's on silent so only you know it has been activated.

When you pick up the call you get a siren through your phone.

Item no 381560474906

You can also get ones that take a sim card but I have not tried these.

Not only can they insist, they can also require a monitored alarm system to be installed if you have more than a certain number of guns or if you live in a high crime area or a council estate where you may have a few known problems.

And if you don't believe me don't get one fitted and see if you get your ticket back. ;)

Yep, the first thing my NEW FEO from Stafford & West Midlands said to me last year was "Is this house alarmed?". I had to show him my system and he then confirmed that I still only had the agreed 12 guns in the house.

A bit officious to start with but he soon mellowed and became quite friendly................soon have him trained ;)

I notice that there is too much emphasis on complaining or getting your shooting organisation involved, whereas a bit of honey will almost always get you more than a load of vinegar..

Did he specify the type of alarm they require?

Like I said, you don't want to go to an expense only to find out they don't accept it.

There are loads of good quality wireless systems available which you can fit yourself to save you labour costs and having to run wires etc.

Is there any set stanard of larm needed? Does it need to be up to BS/EU standard?

I'm wanting to alarm just the cupboard where guns are, got a sparky coming out to rewire shortly but really could do wi the alarm ob before he comes so would be handy to know wot other folk have done.

Its just a 2m x 3m cupboard with only 1 locked door, can i just put an alarm sensor thing on the door or would i still need a PIR sensor inside.

Do the alarms have to phone u/ be monitored.

I've not been asked to put an alarm on but have moved house and want to put 1 on for my own piece of mind

You don't have to have a "Monitored" alarm system , but sometimes your FEO will say that you may need one if you exceed a certain number of guns. I am OK up to 12 guns but after that they want a monitored system.

Bit of a joke really because I am looking at £400 a year for that system, so I am stuck at 12 guns or pay through the nose.

Yale alarm set up as many/few sensors as you need and can add too.The basic system is about 70 quid and can be expended as required. It is B.S/EU approved and is a visual warning to scrotes .We were lucky the neighbour across the road installs them but the extras you can add yourself as the units "talk" to the alarm on fitting correctly .There are as stated systems that will ring /text you on activation but if your on a budget this fits the legal and physical needs atb

I use these to detect intrusion in my outbuildings.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/DIGITECK-Wireless-Driveway-Alarm-Intruder/dp/9792397485

They have a range of approx 100m and work well within a house, so using one to detect intrusion in a room would not be a problem.

As the receiver/alarm sounder is portable you can have it wherever you want within your house and on its loudest setting you won't fail to hear it when it does go off I can assure you.

I got mine from Aldi for around £12 but they only stock them occasionally but at just over 20 quid the Amazon deal is not bad value.
