243 all rounder

Recommended Posts

I know probably been asked a million times before but....

Im picking up my first 243 tikka t3 varmint this week is there a factory round that is good for roe foxes and muntjac in England that performs well in the above gun?

I would like to try and stick to one round if possible. I don't really want to home load as I don't think it will be worth while with the amount of rounds i will be putting through it

I like the 95gr SST as a "do anything" bullet in Tikka T3 varmint.. I've used it for fox to fallow buck, but nothing bigger. I prefer it to the 100gr Gameking, Prohunter, Speer SPBT and Hornady offerings. More accurate, a little faster/flatter and expands fine in fox.

I believe Hornady sell factory loadings of the 95gr SST as part of their Superformance line-up. A 75gr SST option was in the pipeline a few years ago: would probably be ideal if your biggest quarry is Roe

The higher velocity of the 75gr bullet might increase meat damage; not a problem I've had with 95gr.

Its going to more a question of what ammo you can get hold of for it these days. Buy a box of whatever you can find and see how your rifle gets on with it to start with.

I would start with Privi while you are shooting in the barrel and zeroing the scope, just on the basis its cheap but there is nothing wrong with Privi. It will give you a benchmark to compare other brands from.

The federal powershok 100g in the blue box are well worth a try.

good choice. leaves very little meat damage and very accurate round.

you will have a lot of people tell you round xxx will drop deer every time on the spot you will never get a runner etc. when you have shot a few you will realise that this is a very far from the truth. you need to see which round groups well in your gun and which produces the least meat damage. you will get deer that drop on the spot and others will run it has little to do with the round it is more important to know what to do in the situation.
