fortune
Post #21. What did you have to do that for Steve? I was ok until that. Ive been through it three times and have it coming again in the future. I know some blokes who couldn't go through it again and never got another dog because it hurt them so much. The loss of my last spaniel was ten times harder than when I lost either my mother or father.

Hector Vector
I know just how you feel right now. Had to let my old boy Pippin go just over 3 weeks ago. He turned 14 on the 3rd of last month so he did very well but it doesn't make it any easier. I've had Bassets (always rescues) for years, had a mini-pack of 4 together for a while, ordinary dogs they are not. They are hounds and that makes them very special in a way only Basset owners (who also have to be very special!) can ever understand and appreciate... Glenlivet
Took my 13 year old Jack Russel for his final walk a few months ago. Never easy but the best thing for the dog.... Edited October 19, 2016 by Glenlivet
Fuji Shooter
Sad day indeed. My Lab is 14 and on his last legs, not looking forward to that day soon.
Zapp
Sorry to hear this. Mine are 8 and 6, so hopefully a way off, but I dread it all the same.

Like everyone else, she was a very special dog to me, especially after losing my 14 year old son.
fortune
Because it's a poem that 'still' helps me when I think of the day I had my Jack Russell put to sleep. Like everyone else, she was a very special dog to me, especially after losing my 14 year old son. I can no to the wife and kids but the spaniel just looked straight at and through me and I was butter to the dog. That poem went straight through me and I could see the gaze of the spaniel out in the field when I missed one or it was waiting for me on the junction of the track out of the wood. how I miss the three dogs that have passed by. Our next door neighbour when I lived at home with the parents always had Bassets. I used to walk them for her when they were on holiday and they always stayed with us for a couple of weeks.. You are right they are quite unlike any other breed of dog. She also had a cat which we fed and let out twice a day. Last feed was 10 pm at night on the dot and the cat was always waiting by the back door. One of them would not settle or sleep for two or three days so we rang the owner. She said Oh I forgot to tell you Winny wont sleep until he knows the cat is in safe and sound...so let him sleep in the house in his basket by the door and call the cat in at about 10.pm Did the trick. ! Spoonbed
Lost my choc Lab of 13 1/2 years earlier today. What with the death of my best mate, and now my old dog, I think it's fair to say 2016 can do one.
Lord Geordie
Never understood peoples attatchment to animals! Until Chros and I got Dibble. He was our Portuguese Podengo! What a nut case that dog was! When we lost him! It broke us both! It scarred Chris emotionally and I vowed never again! Now Chris has grown up, we got Tilly! Rescued her from the pound! And she is an absolute joy to have aroud the house! I hope she passed peacefully, and you got to hold her one last time!
