Fac shotgun or sgc?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm after some advice. I'm looking for a shotgun, just the 1. I'm debating wether to put in for my sgc or just get one on my fac? Will be using it for crow/jackdaw/pigeon. Looking at a hatsan? Also any recommendations on what to get. Budget is maybe £300 tops. Thanks

Sorry double post mods please remove one, thanks

Have you got permissions on land to do pest control on? If you don't then you will have trouble getting a FAC as you need to show good reason to have a FAC and would be better off getting your SGC. With the standard 3 s/a you can also use it at clay grounds if you wanted to go down that route at a latter date, as a few grounds won't let you use a FAC shotgun on their grounds.

I have an Escort Magnum 8 shot FAC. It's excellent and has never let me down in the 6 years I've owned it.

I think you sent me a link to your video a few months ago, I am tempted by one of them!

I've already got a fac, just wondering if I should get a sgc or a fac shotgun added to it

As mentioned, to have FAC shotgun, you need good reason. My FEO advised me to apply, stating that I wanted it for 'crop protection'. This was backed up by a letter from the farmer stating that his crops were being hammered. I did this and there were no problems.

I bought a 5 shot Escort Magnum and then bought the conversion kit to make it an 8 shot. The most I've fired in one go (apart from demonstration purposes) is 4. The shotgun has never let me down in the 6 years that I've owned it, and, should it pack in all together, I'll get another one.

Are you ever going to be in a situation where you really need a 4th shot? If you missed with the first 3, will the 4th be any better?

A friend of mine has an 8 shot and always tells this tale of a flock of ferals coming over and he shot 8 times and there was 12 dead in the air at the same time. Not that I doubt his word, but if that ever did happen what are the chances of it ever happening twice.

8 shot sounds good on paper, but I think with the aggro of acquiring, selling and losing the multifunction option, you're better off with a 2 + 1.

I have an 8 shot and it states "flock control" on my licence, i have a few farms that have upwards of 1000 crows on them at a time. And the forth shot fith shot sixth etc come in handy yes. All depends how you look at it. 3 crows come over 3 shots taken maybe hit 2, then i know i have five in the gun still 4 in spout one in hole. So next crow or group go over and im ready.

Someone once asked me why I needed 8 shots. He commented, 'by the time you fire the 8th shot, the birds will be too far away'. :| I explained to him that I don't use 8 shots to shoot birds that are flying away, but when I put decoys down, and a load of Corvid's come into my pattern, I can shoot at least 3-4. If after firing a few shots, they (obviously) fly away, I don't fire any more shots.

There should not be any aggro' for the OP, if he follows the advice I gave him, and, in my case, I don't intend (ever) selling my FAC shotgun.

I applied for mine with no set ground to shoot on and got it, no questions asked.

Ticket came back open (they also opened up my section 1 air rifle too...)

Wording stated "for use on vermin feather and fur, and also clay pigeon shooting"

Sold it a while ago but will be buying another one shortly as have had several occasions where I have been decoying and could have done with it.
