Wilksy II
JDog has been kind enough to keep me in mind when looking for some flight lining and Thursday was the day, I was off work and the wind was right so off I went down to the Lincolnshire wolds, pick up full of decoy gear, gun, pack up, flask and enough cartridges to make pigeons endangered! JDog said we would see pigeons, lots of pigeons but getting at them wasn't certain, firstly we drove to a lovely area, "pigeon city" a fir wood, and recently cut maize strip near a rape field all set in deep dale sheltered from all sides, we saw a few but no movement and none on the maize, where he had seen good numbers building, so on to the next location a long thin wood on a ridge overlooking west lincs and as far as Newark on a clear day. Tall trees and another game strip and loads of pigeons, we placed ourselves in the north tip of the wood and waited, this is a well observed flightline and JDog knew were I needed to be to get under a few, well they came just as he said ,ones, pairs groups of five or more I managed to drop a couple and it dried up, not wanting to waste the day JDog decide a change of location was needed. The third spot was another tall wood bigger and wider, set in a dale with spring fed stream running through it, beautiful! Again JDog put me in the hot spot and again loads of pigeons about, but they were jumpy and not coming like he'd hoped managed one and we moved back to the first location, still no birds to set up for so back to the first wood, bit more of a line now and in the same spot, they came over great, I managed to connect with five including a left and right but they were high quality birds! The day was cracking on so another move to the second wood saw us both get some shooting, I should say that JDog was shooting all day and shot some cracking birds, but was always looking to get me in best spot, total for me for the day was eight of the best high flighted pigeons I've ever shot! Today was a ride down to kettering to see Wabbitbosher, I had a yearning for a hammer gun,JDog and aga man were invited along but unfortunately due to family commitments they could make it, so just me and radio 2 made the 2 1/2 journey daan saarth, got to micks and what a top bloke he is! Had a good natter (turns out his fore fathers are east yorks folk) and gawp at his gun room, bought my Davis hammer gun (very happy) and toddled off. JDog then rings can you detour for a spot of roost shooting? The sat nav said eta che JDog 3:25 perfect! When I got there JDog was waiting to go, the shooting had started let's crack on! So after finding a couple of woods already taken we found a good sheltered fir wood favoured by pigeons and got in place, I didn't have to wait long to christen my new gun first bird down! Followed by a cheer from JDog, second bird hit hard but gathered itself up and cleared off! Third bird down! This is getting surreal, but then the bubble burst miss followed miss and normal shooting was resumed. JDog was shooting well and enjoying himself taking down a bird that I watched sail by at a hell if a height, followed by another cheer! We finished with 12 picked but again the quality of the birds you can't buy it! All in all a very enjoyable couple if days thankyou Jdog! JDog
An excellent account of our two forays. Wilksy might be a novice decoyer but he can certainly shoot.
Sprinter
A very credible story, right up to the part where you visited Mr Bosher and he allowed you to escape having only purchased the one gun?
bakerboy
An excellent account of our two forays. Wilksy might be a novice decoyer but he can certainly shoot. Wilksy is a great Guy. He pushed hard to organise a BASC Introduction to Woodpigeon Shooting Course a year or two back and managed to get enough people together to hold the course. I was very pleased to drive from North London to the Humberside Shooting Ground to deliver the course with Flycoy from Pigeon Watch. If it had not been for Wilksy the course would not have taken place, I hope a little of what he learned help him enjoy the day and top and improve his knowledge from a great bloke "Jdog" Well done to all involved in the shooting.
