Old Boggy
Having watched the pigeons build up on a field of drilled beans, I decided to have a few hours last Saturday. However, I was a little disappointed to note that another shooter (2 sharing a hide as it turned out) had beaten me to it but being retired I invariably shoot in the week so allowing those still working to enjoy their weekend shooting so thought that as he was out all day and I through personal reasons only go out for a few hours at a time in my mind wished him good sport. I therefore decided on a few hours decoying over rape, travelling fairly light with seat, half a dozen dead breasted birds from a previous session, a flapper and of course my favourite 16 bore side by side and cartridges. Having the wind on my back and a small copse behind, the birds were coming from a regular flight-line unseen from behind and turning into the decoys often taking me by surprise. After quite a few bad misses, I found a bit of form and started to knock a few down. Apart from many that flew over not taking any notice of the decoys, I was pleased with the way they were decoying and clearly thought that I must have something right. I had set up at about 1pm and at 4pm when my domestic duty called and had just got a cracking right and left, decided to finish on a high. I finished picking up 24 birds. Not a massive amount by other accounts I read on PW but quite good and perfectly adequate for me and an absolute cracking few hours sport. Whilst the rape is fairly well on, there was a large bare patch where the decoys showed up well and made for easy picking up. On driving the couple of miles home I passed the bean field and stopped to see two shooters struggling off the field having shot 88 pigeons. I was pleased for them that they had made the most of their day having shot from 8am and also that my modest bag was just enough for my ageing bones to carry off the field. Perhaps the bean field may offer me an outing mid week given a few days to quieten down. My few 100+ days are now long gone so another 20-30 birds will be sufficient for me. pigeon controller
Brilliant report, it's not the numbers shot but the enjoyment received. We have a lot of retired shooters who shoot in the week on our shoots but this does not bother me. Old Boggy
Brilliant report, it's not the numbers shot but the enjoyment received. We have a lot too retired shooters who shoot in the week on our shoots but this does not bother me. And so it shouldn`t PC as your service to the farmers is second to none. It also should not bother more casual shooters. I always enjoy your posts with their detailed descriptions of your days and have learnt a lot from them. I admire your total dedication, perseverance and expertise. OB
Cranfield
Nice report Old Boggy and probably echoes the sort of days that most of us retired/mid week shooters experience. Having little "competition" mid week shooting, it does increase our chances of dropping on to the birds and getting some good sport. Unless I am specifically called out, I don't shoot any part of the weekend
Wilksy II
Great shooting! If you think about it two lads shooting all day 44 each 22 in half a day! A bit simplistic I know but one way of looking at it!
