12gauge82
I'm getting a bike for a bit of motorway commuting and some weekend cruising, which out of the two would be the better choice? Any other suggestions? I'm also 6' 5" so the more leg room the better.

12gauge82
I like retro but that'll take me all day to get anywhere 😂
drut
Hyabusa or ZZR1400 viable alternatives,at your height its worth sitting on them all:they are all capable but not all will be comfortable. For motorway use(boring) I would just as soon travel by car & weekend "cruising" smacks of Harley D.If you want to enjoy motorcycling any of your choices will be fine,if you must have practicality(replacement for car?)something like a 1300 Pan would be an option.Motorcycling is not always about sensible choices but more about how much you enjoy your life. 12gauge82
Cheers drut, the hyabusa is too small, I like the zzr but it's one ugly bike imho need to sit on one. Anyone any opinion on the new adventure bikes vs the sports tourers like the multistrada, pros and cons ect?

12gauge82
Thanks guys, I'll take a look at one of those, British built to 👍
theshootist
The 1050 triple is a stonking engine. Plenty of torque. Its an old bike compared to today's competition, they can have ABS but none of the traction control aids necessary on the latest generation of bikes with 150 and 160 bhp engines. I had the shocks revalved and rear shock rebuilt by MCT, I love the ride.
figgy
What about a KTM tall enough and has all the traction control and abs. Pretty rapid too. Think I'd go small car for commute and something low slung and Harley like for weekend cruising.
12gauge82
I don't know what it is with adventure bikes like the ktm, I know it makes sense especially as I'm tall and you can see over traffic for filtering in traffic jams but, they just don't do it for me, it seems like sports tourers or bikes like the k1300 or vfr1200f (whatever category they fall into) are becoming a thing of the past. slaphead
Test ride a 1290 Superduke... my extremely tall (giant) mate can fit on one and so can little ole me
theshootist
You're right they are becoming a rare breed. However the adventure bike has come a long way since the r1200. The 1290 KTM is now a 160bhp bike, as is the s1000xr. Why compromise an upright position when you can sit behind a big screen and smash through the air with power? I've ridden a buddy's multistrada and it's also a fantastic bike. My sprint could just keep up in some testing we did on the continent. The KTM 990 SMT is also a fantastic machine. 12gauge82
Right, I didn't think I'd say this but I can see a super Duke test ride coming up, thanks for all the suggestions guys.
shaun4860
Bro in law and a mate both have the multistrada and they love them, Bro in law had the Triumph Street Triple R, Yamaha Tracer, And a Triumph 1050 Adventure type as well, (Only 1 at a time lol) IMO the nicest looking were the 1050 Triumph and the Yamaha Tracer

impala59
Harley all the way for me, the engines are a bit agricultural but are lazy and make for a relaxing ride. I've had my XL1200 C, last of the carb models, for 13 years now, commuted. toured, gone down the shops etc I would not change it for anything I have a '98 DR Big 800 in the garage waiting for restoration which was so tall when I bought it that I changed the front wheel from 21" to 17" so I could reach the ground! 12gauge82
I like all bikes including Harleys, I just prefer others, if I had my way my garage would be full of all sorts but the Mrs would do her nut😅
cromwell7
ZZR 1400 isn't that roomy I'm 6 ft 1 and found the XJR1300 I had at the time more comfy.

If not il advise you too! I have a fetish for ktm to say the least... check ariemann on YouTube, he does a bit on the big adventure bikes and you can see what they can do along with the normal road riding. Something quite different if I'm honest. Or the new superduke... wet dreams spring to mind Oh, and they sound lovely with akrspovics on.... 12gauge82
Had a test ride of several bikes, ktm super duke, bmw k1300s, triumph tiger, couple more to try and then I'm going to get one within the next 2 weeks.
sidawson
both are good options i'm 6ft 7 and both of them felt good to me the zzr is nice but found it very small i was able to stride it while it was on it's centre stand and was still a couple of inches above the bike, the r1200gs is a nice bike too for us tall people
