Normally yes, but a mate had a one-for-one where he traded rifles with another shooter. His variation allowed him to take on the new rifle only when he'd exchanged the old one. bullet1747
You have to sell the one you have and apply for variation , you don't have the licence to own a second

saddler
As above. Nope. Both wrong. See my first reply. NOT a one-off occurrence, heard of similar slots being given.(Keep current firearm but new "one-for-one permission slot" only legal when THAT firearm has been disposed of) What about Northern Ireland? Totally different one-for-one system to the rest of the UK... Best for OP to run it past his Firearms Department.
Davyo
When I upgraded a rimfire I had to sell the old one 1st,then send in my licence for a 1 for 1 slot to purchase the new.

A second hand Tikka came up privately, a mates rifle that had seen little use, Firearms allowed me an overlap variation so I would have time to sell one firearm while being able to purchase the new firearm on a one for one basis. I did speak to my FEO who told me to send a letter in with the license to explain my requirements. No doubt each force will have their own opinion on this type of deal. CharlieT
Apply for a 1 for 1 variation and request that your existing rifle is put on a S7 temporary permit. This will then allow you to to keep your existing rifle until you sell it. It's what I have always done when changing so that I am never without a useable rifle.
