Red-dot
OK, i left school at 15 and went from one career to the next and never really took much time to enjoy the fruits until i had a cancer removed two years ago. I now work rest and play as i choose but it's now time to do something that others get the benefit from. I have mentored many youngsters in all aspects of the countryside and our sport but i feel i would like to help our community and country and i am looking for the opportunity to give something back. I am fully conversant with the drilling industry and mechanical industry and road transport and gamekeeping but is there a new venture for me that i can give others a step up? Red-dot
I don't agree with 99% of charities due to their admin costs in relation to end user benefits. I have done the soup and food bank handouts in Glasgow but all the customers were prostitutes and drunks.
Grandalf
Most ladies don't become prostitutes from choice. Most drunks would give up if they could. I reckon you were in the right place to do some good.

peck
Why not start a Men's Shed. They are mainly aimed at older men who have time on their hands either through being being retired , made redundant and cannot find a job just looking for something to do. I helped start one in our area and its great for older men to go along and either make something for themselves make something for the local community or to pass on skills they have to others who are willing to learn new skills. some of them even buy vintage tractors to do the up, it all depends on what the men want to do. A lot of Sheds start by making items from wood, its easy to work and relatively inexpensive to get hold of especially if you use reclaimed materials. There are hundreds of sheds now all over the UK and others are opening all the time. Here's a link to the UK Men's Shed Assn, they have a map with the sheds that are already set up and plenty of info on starting new sheds. http://menssheds.org.uk/ Edited March 30, 2017 by peck

Train as a citizens advice advisor? Witness support? School reader for under par kids who's parents can't read to them? Magistrate? Offer driving/support to a hospice? Work in a charity shop? Hourly paid lecturer in a FE college? Samaritan volunteer? Man the phones for childline two hours a night? Victim support? I could go on, if you have the time, philanthropy will enrich you. zx10mike
get involved with the running of your local council and stamp out the brown envelope makes things happen brigade.so many councillors have a hidden agenda and don't give one hoot about the area they are supposed to. Red-dot
Some good thoughts there....
Eyefor
RD, you've got a tremendous ability with the English language, so why not help others enjoy the same? Teaching adults to read is a good cause link here http://readeasy.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer/ (others available) and maybe help these people to write as well? No multi-layer bureaucracy and you get the direct feedback helping people that want to learn? Just a thought.... Iain
