buze
Here I was at AGL last saturday, minding my own business (went shooting with my 1890 english 12 bore, I have a rather huge bruise on the front of my index finger as a badge of honor) Anyway here I was looking at the shop, and I see that nice 410 SxS on the counter -- just received as part exchange... A few weeks back, Emmet&Stone lent me a 410 single barrel to have a play, and we really loved it; I could break fast crossers at ~30yards with it, it was actually quite fun! So I had in the back of my mind to perhaps get a SxS or O/U if I'd find a suitable one... So I stare at that gun, and I ask the guy what's the pull, he measures 14" -- which is quite OK, it's not a 'kid gun' -- and it's Ejector, and it's Single Trigger, and as I shoulder it, it comes up actually very nicely thank you very much.... Good weight to it, obviously made like a *tank* (Made in Russia) -- and on top of it, the wood doesn't even look like a plank... So I ask how much, and the guy says... £250 -- so I bought it, there and then! Then I turn to my wife who was on the other side of the shop and tell her "BTW darling, I've just bought another shotgun" -- just to see her face; it worked -- arh arh arh! However she had a look, shouldered it, and immediately liked it too, so she didn't break it over my head, which is pretty good result! So I might do a bit of pest control with it, but I'll probably shoot it on clays for the hell of it; and I might even try to join the 410 championship at Mid Wales later in the year! Picked a baby-sized 'slab' of 'Clay and Game' Hull, not entirely sure if its' a good load, but I'll discover that tomorrow...
fortune
One of the son in laws has got one of those for a bit of fun. The barrels are so thick that they look more like a double barrel rifle than a shotgun. It is good fun on clays.

The barrels are so thick that they look more like a double barrel rifle than a shotgun. It is good fun on clays. That is because they use the same barrels for all small bores up to 20 bore, they just make the holes bigger.

Nice gun by the way bet that baby slab of 410 carts set you back a bit! Ah, were you any of the gents sporting a SxS? I saw several, it was quite nice actually -- rarely see any SxS on other shooting grounds, but AGL seems to have a bit of a 'club' there... Yeah 410 is as expensive as 12! Wonder how the manufacturers can explain *that* one given the argument of 'lead is SO expensive'... £70 for a slab *gulps*...
Pigeon Shredder.
See £250 well spent on something you wanted, and not on those silly glasses you were admiring last week.
buze
See £250 well spent on something you wanted, and not on those silly glasses you were admiring last week. To be fair, I love watching shooting videos on youtube, and they all use something far more annoying (GoPro), so I'm always on the lookout for something not as stupid. That one looks half promising (the glasses) but it's unlikely they will fit my wife, and the '1 hour' battery life is a little bit lame. Anyway, I'll continue looking out for new tech... The little Baikal is very impressive, I have a bit of a soft spot for russian made mechanical kit -- my sharpest DSLR lens is russian, and my favourite 35mm camera is also russian; and this one looks straight out of the same workshop(s). I will certainly report!

Not this time it was a toss up between my Perazzi or my Mossberg pump. As my shooting partner was keen on a small wager I took the Perazzi.. I lost and ended up buying the bacon sarnies and then beers in the evening! Will take the Mossberg next time!
neutron619
Picked a baby-sized 'slab' of 'Clay and Game' Hull, not entirely sure if its' a good load, but I'll discover that tomorrow... Is that the 11g loading in the 2½" case? If it breaks clays / kills birds for you, then great, but when I tried them I wasn't impressed. I can get them, but I don't. Have a look at the Eley Trap cartridge. I've shot their 3" / 19g version in my new-ish .410 and I'm seriously impressed. I imagine the 2½" / 14g version will be equally good, once one has accounted for the smaller payload. That said - beware all recommendations of cartridges until you've tested them in your gun. If I know one thing about .410's, it's that they're a bit like .22LRs: you may very well find that they like one brand of cartridges, and one only. Good luck (and welcome to the Kingdom of the Small Bores "proper")!
buze
@neutron, it's Clay and Game (Hull) and it's 2 1/4" of #7's (plastic wad) I had a go earlier, did a couple of rounds of Compak with the 410, and it's quite fun! Took a little while to find where the gun is shooting (no pattern plate handy). Managed to fire a couple into a pile of broken clay tho, that helped a lot. Quite a small pattern, quite a bit narrower than the 410 single barrel I shot a few weeks back, so this one must have 'chokes'. Still, I *did* manage to get the mojo working, and by the end I managed some nice ones, including sim pairs! Was very please, it's a lot of fun, it's like shooting with a pencil! The 'perceived lead' is smaller than what I have with my 12 bore, and it also shoots 'low' compared to my normal gun, but when you put the pellets in the right place, no problem breaking the 30 yarders, I was well impressed with the little gun! Taking the guerini afterward felt like dropping a pencil and picking up a hammer ;-)

Taking the guerini afterward felt like dropping a pencil and picking up a hammer ;-) I'm glad they're working out for you. I've no particular objection to Hull cartridges, or anyone else's - i just found they were a bit loose / light on the pattern plate in my single barrel Baikal when I had it. It sounds like it might be worth putting a handful through the SxS I've since bought. I would have done anyway, for various reasons, but they haven't been high on my list of loads to test since there are still some 3" loads I haven't played with. Everything in time. As for the Guerini - well - I know what you mean. I don't often shoot a 12 gauge, though I did pick up one from wabbitbosher recently with which I've been having a bit of a play: I can't deny that every time I fire it, I think to myself "is this really necessary...?" moorvale55
I use the Baikal .410 hushpower and have been pleased with Hull cartridge 2 1/2" No6 at 11 grms, I also use Fiocchi 3" No4 at 19 grms. I don't shoot clays but have found both types of cartridges good on pigeon, rabbits and rats.
Stonepark
If the patterns a bit narrow, you are looking at baikal chokes, always plenty of metal. Opening them up to. 395 and. 397 would see some benefits for clays and game if you keep shotsize no7 and smaller.
Tedly47
I use gamebore 16g in my .410... love shooting it and it's a great pest control tool, I've killed corvids beyond 40 yards stone dead in the air.. Tedly

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone know of anyone in East Anglia who stocks them? Yep! I've seen you do it! Just saw that browning123 had brought this thread back to life... I wouldn't normally encourage resurrection of the dead, but it just so happens that I patterned the Hull 11g / #6 load in my Yildiz yesterday. It averaged 64 pellets in the 30" circle at 30 yards, through the tighter of the two chokes I was using (0.020" constriction). The looser choke was poorer still. If people are getting good kills with that load, then fair play to them, but that's about half the number of pellets I'd consider barely adequate for any kind of game shooting. Data and example patterns available on request. Still looking for some Gamebore .410 cartridges to test though, in case anyone knows where to get some.
