If it was the rimmmy,it was barrel down (14").If it was the 243 Howa with big Sonic mod then it was up.Either way both carried with nothing chambered. Was nearly shot in the legs years ago buy someone carryin a chambered gun.Missed me by inches.

The main reason that I like to carry muzzle up is ,if it rains I put a piece of masking tape over the muzzle end to stop the rain getting into the barrel . Any water then runs down the barrel and the bolt housing and out the bottom of the carrier and not down the barrel . Carried muzzle down in the rain can allow water to ingress into the bolt housing and into the barrel and chamber . The piece of tape don't need to taken off the barrel and you can shoot through it .

I have a hardy moderator on my stalking rifle, which has a sort of muzzle-break designed into the end. Unfortunately when it rains this design acts as a very effective funnel to channel water into the barrel. Have thought of sticking a condom over the end, but not sure how coming back from Scotland with half a dozen used johnnies will go down with the other half

for me it depends, there is a club i shoot at that demands muzzle down. Its their rules and I will abide by them

if I am out in the field then its always muzzle up - less of me is above the muzzle when its up and its easier to drop off the shoulder and onto target. Muzzle down always seems to need some gun swinging a la the US marines when they sling their guns around
