misser
hi..just a quick question to the more learned dog folk on here; have got a 3 and a half yr old lab bitch, she has had a litter, midway between seasonsshe has just undergone a false pregnancy (or so the vet says). She was a nightmare, totally changed behaved as though she was in season. He said that now shes has one false pregnancy it could happen all the time; he mentioned it might be an idea to get her spayed, what do the pw massive reckon to this, any comments or pros and cons please...thanks...atb...misser
Penelope
This seems to help my Lab bitch with her phantoms. https://www.csjk9.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=58&idcategory=
loriusgarrulus
The advantages of spaying a bitch once fully mature is that it eliminates the risk of pyometria and lessons the chances of mammary tumours, although with mammary tumours the younger they are spayed the less the risk. You also do not lose the use of the bitch twice a year for 3 weeks at a time due to being in season. There is a risk of spay incontinance after spaying and the coat often goes more wooley after spaying.
Ollieollie
My vizsla has developed mild incontinence since being spayed, didn't know that it might happen
ips
The incontinence issue was one of the main reasons I have left my bitch intact.

misser
thanks for all the advice...... can put up with a few hiccups especially if it possibly reduces the risk of illness and problems in later life....thanks again...atb...misser
loriusgarrulus
Choose your vet well. I believe incontinance sometimes could be caused by damage caused during spaying. A friend of mine had incontinance after a hystorectomy and she had to have corrective surgery due to something getting nicked during the hystorectomy. Another friend had a Weimaraner that had spay incontinance. Her original vet didnt want to know. She took her bitch to a specialist vet in Edinburgh at great cost and had more surgery done which cured her. Sometimes incontinance can be caused by lower levels of hormones and can be alleviated by estrogen tablets, but these have to be taken for life. We had a 5year old GSD who had to have an emergency spay and 3 days at the vet after getting pyometria. She was fine as we caught her in time, but had a £700 bill around years 2004/2005. loriusgarrulus
Taking the estrogen pills may increase the risk of mammary tumours. So its swings and roundabouts as to the best option.

A1Decoy
We got our Labrador spade at 3 as we didn't want a litter. She had seasons at bad times and even when she wasn't in season dogs would try it on, it was a pain in the *** in general. We were worried she would gain weight as shes a typical lab who loves food. She had keyhole surgery which was £100 more and she was was herself in 2 days, apart from 3 little wounds she had to take it steady but back to normal work in 2 weeks! She hasn't gained a KG over a year later, it hasn't changed her whatsoever, in fact i'd say shes a better working dog. She has more of a drive to work as isn't fussed by male dogs or obsessed with other dogs as much now, she also now puts them in their place if they go near her where as before she wouldn't of. We also had our collie keyhole spayed at 2, all went to plan but she doesn't work 'properly' just picks up on a odd day - hasn't gained any weight either, both have lovely figures. I disagree that spaying makes their coats wooley, we always get compliments on both our dogs shiny coats and condition. I'd go for it. Find a good surgeon who does keyhole, its a much nicer way of spaying. Aimee @ A1 Edited August 14, 2017 by A1Decoy
