washerboy
Having never owned a fix mag scope I am after some advice.Always had 6x12x40 or something along them lines but I fancy a fixed mag scope. It will be to used on an old Webley I’m looking to buy and have serviced/tuned. bruno22rf
IMHO 4x40 will take care of 99.9% of shooting situations.

People seem to say this but other than close range rats I cant imagine folk not turning up the mag, I'm normally on 8 or 10 on a 6*24*44 only go to the silly end of the mag on paper I used to have a 8*56 and its certainly simpler point and shoot but I would stick with variable you can always just leave it on six say, you can't adjust if the options not there. what scopes are you using on the squirrels Bruno? I'm guessing not 4*40?
strimmer_13
6x40 fine for 30 yards

Wb123
I use a 6x42 on my 22lr with no complaints. I have iron sights on my air rifle at present but would anticipate if going back to a scope going low power fixed magnification.
Ultrastu
I dont really use many of my guns below 9x mag for general hunting . I do wind down some scopes to1.5 x for very close range rats . I have a couple of 2-7 x scopes and find the 7x a bit limited beyond 25 yds. If i were to have a fixed mag for general work it would be either 8 xor 9 x mag . As a dedicated barn gun probably 6x . But not 4x.
steve_b_wales
8x56 should suit 99% of your needs.
Guest
I use x8 with 40mm and x10 with 50mm; no need for any other mag for me (I used to be a x4 fan though).
bruno22rf
Both my scopes are 3-9 x 50's but the vast majority of the time they're set at 5x - cannot remember the last time I altered them.

Not the magic 4*40 then only saying this because folk seem to say this only I've never found them much use other than plinking and lamping rats,
bruno22rf
In my younger days the 4x40 was pretty much the standard scope and they served us well - times have changed and I would guess that a 50mm lens is about the norm nowadays as scopes have become cheaper and more versatile. I can still remember using a 4x15 scope where the adjusting screws actually moved the cross hairs so you often found the centre of the aiming point way off centre - weird. Mice!
I think its probably down to PCPs you can shoot groups you can cover with a 5p piece but probably not with a 4*40 bit more mag needed to get good grouping beyond 20 mts shot my squirrel this morning on 10*, it was huge ? team tractor
I’m only using 3.5x on my 243 but with an air rifle I find it’s not enough. low mags fine on big guns as it’s centre mass. with an air rifle you need to not just aim at the head but certain parts. Id be happy with either 8 or 10 mag. I used 10x42 on my air rifle for years. Standard hft scopes are 10mag and that’s 5-45 yards.

Quite shocking but that's .177 inside 25y for you.
