One little mistake 😟 i only lost it once and I did find it again although a weekend with fat Sara or bubbles has potential i could pretend to lose it 😉🤭 stick aside this this is a awesome project the sheer amount of skill involved beggars belief i count myself fortunate having ditchman even taking the time to look at the knife never mind mending it

Old farrier
It’s all looking good and many thanks to the blue chips 🍟 corporations that are involved shall we have to watch out for a multi national corporate takeover? I think the blade was just a touch larger when new 🤗

ditchman
started work on the blade.........used a hacksaw to cut it out ..as i didnt want to wharp it with heat...........the steel is nice to work in its annealed state but hard all the same.....the blade will be a lambsfoot /sheepsfoot blade....(like the cross section of a sheeps foot)......... i will shape the outline first.....then hand cut and needle file the locking lugs....then get it to the right blade thickness......and finally do an 80% scandi cut ...i will leave some meat on it as i will then harden it and air cool to harden...then temper to 220deg's..........will do that 3 times (the temper)...... then i will finish the cutting on the linisher machine.....fit and rivert together and put a 12 or 15 deg edge on it ...(that will be after polishing it)
TIGHTCHOKE
Glad you like the D2, I kept the block just in case. Are the small dots your marking out as well as the pen line?

PS...........what do yopu use D2 for at your place...stamps ....dies...machine tools ? Edited April 26, 2019 by ditchman

That's the odd part of this whole episode, we use very little of it and that sliver came off a scrap piece that someone had thought may be useful! The first piece I was given was a much harder steel that was already hardened, I doubt you would have been able to work it.
ditchman
if you look at some of the close up pics of the broken blade.........you will see i had to anneal it to drill the new 3.2mm datum hole in it.........when i did anneal it i was really surprised at the ammount of slag that oused out ...you can see it ..........if that steel was worked and pounded and folded even more it would have been a very good steel........i rekon the knife must be nearly 100 years old ....old farrier was given it by his grandad and old farrier is in his 70's and the knife grandad got was 2nd hand even then....... it will be interesting to see how the d2 hardens...its supposed to be the holy grail of knife steel ......... Grandalf
I left home and signed up for twelve years in the army because of my mum. I was just fifteen at the time. They are not all painted saints. Loved my Mother in Law though...
