He hasn't got the sparkle that makes you think wow he's good.

Whatever your politics, you have to admit that the Tory front benchers, individually and collectively, when they stand up at that daily briefing all give you the impression of being in control of their brief and exude a professional and calm determination.

Of course we know the virus dictates the agenda and the timetable. There will be no exit strategy until the time comes to plan one.

In a sense there IS an exit strategy --- it is 'herd immunity', preferably created by a vaccine - and the best minds in the pharmaceutical industry worldwide are on the case 100%.  However for the tactics needed in the shorter term to get to be able to fulfil the strategy ------- there are unknowns.  We are in an unknown situation, immunity testing, possible immunity following infection, possible treatments for those suffering bad symptoms (Remdesivir seems hopeful), the vast amounts of people who travel freely (and possibly carrying the virus) across the globe when allowed and various other key pieces of the jigsaw are not yet in place.

With the doubts that are present, to firmly and boldly announce any detailed action plan and timetable would be a massive and quite unacceptable political risk - as well as possibly misleading those making plans at home and business level.

Although enjoying broad public support, there are those (including some on this forum) who miss not a single opportunity to have continual little 'digs' at the government/Johnson/Hancock/ministers when mistakes are highlighted by hindsight.    Mistakes there inevitably will be because we are following the scientific advice - and the scientists are working in new and unknown ground using their best knowledge and past experience as a guide - but that is a risk - and there is no way round the fact that mistakes are likely to be made however hard we try and 'get things right'.

But to be fair, that is the nation of politics and even the original post in this thread politicised the point by misquoting what the leader of the opposition actually said, anyway...

I think everyone in their right mind accepts that mistakes will happen, there should be no shame in applying scrutiny to ascertain that some of the mistakes are not in fact negligence. I'm sure you'd agree they are two very different things.

Regarding the performance of the govt front bench in the daily press conferences, has our expectations of politicians fallen so low that we would expect, or indeed accept, anything less than composure and professionalism from them? The key thing is distinguishing between the impression and the reality, but now is not the time for the dissection of that.

Regardless of whether they have things under control or are struggling on most fronts, the reality is they are the ones handling this and they are the best / only option we have right now.

The enquiries and mud-slinging can wait.

Regarding Starmer, probably the best we could have hoped for and certainly an upgrade on the previous plum in that role, not that that's likely to change anything, unless the Tories really mess things up...
