mad1
Hi all Just planning and plotting my next job. I have a 1984 110 defender with galv chassis and 200tdi engine in... It's mainly my shooting toy but after watching u tube I'm thinking about either a v8 or td5 engine swap... Nothing wrong with the 200tdi as it runs well (for a tractor!) What's your thoughts on a swap ya or nay....its getting raptor lined in next few week when I find somewhere to do it... Already got roof top tent ,hi lift, overnight heater ,etc etc...... How much am I looking at for either engine too. Thanks in advance M1
Walker570
I run a 3.9 V8 in mine on LPG...well duel fuel as it also has petrol as well if needed. Price wise about the same as a diesel but that V8 sounds fantastic. Mine is linked to an LT85 box which although a bit noisy is also very strong. Find your local independant Land Rover engineers and ask around. My 3.9 brand spaning specialist hand built was if I remember £2500 My Landie is a 1989 90 inch but has a galvanised chassis, Range Rover Classic back axle(disc brakes) Uprated shocks. Runs on big fat 15 inch rims. I have a square(American style) tow bar fitment so can slot on a carry rack for a couple of deer if need be. Now to be honest, if the present engine is running well, why change it and before anyone shouts out, I purchased mine with a 3.5 V8 engine fitted, it was done for, so the 3.9 replaced it. I'm fortunate in having two local LPG sites and to run the V8 without the LPG is a pocket drainer. I calculate normal everyday work etc mine does about 30mpg MONEY WISE. seph234
I would keep it nice and simple with the 200tdi. my dad had nothing but agro with his td5 Disco.(leaky fuel cooler, split fuel chamber which is built into the head. oil getting in the loom etc etc. in my opinion the TD5 is a **** engine. my defender which had a 200tdi always fired first time and never let me down. ninjaferret
200 tdi is bullet proof td5's do have problems but once sorted are good but................
matone
I`d stick with the 200tdi if it`s a good one!!
Marccus
200tdi all day long! Reliable and fixable! I run a 300tdi and so far it's been bomb proof but is well maintained. 👍👍
Scully
My old 90 had a 3.5 V8 in it when I bought it, but the LPG tank took up All the space in the rear so it had to go as running it without LPG was just unaffordable. It was replaced with a 200 tdi and it cost me my old Disco 1, which at the time was worth about 1500 quid. It's 300 tdi engine is still going somewhere! The 200tdi is a very good engine, but I think is a little underpowered for a 110, but that's just my opinion. TD5's are good too, but can come with their own problems. mad1
Hi all, Yeah I think I'll just stick with the 200tdi for the time being then. Just put any money into more guns and ammo to play with 😀 It's got the fuel pump mod and pin, shorter side exit s/s exhaust with silencers removed so it does sound quite nice for what it is... Thanks all M1 Edit to add: Possibly look at a turbo and intercooler upgrade instead. Edited May 6, 2020 by mad1
SpringDon
If it’s sound and ungraded then it will equal the td5 in most areas anyway. The td5 is a good engine but so is the 200. Having said that, if you don’t do many miles I’d fit a v8 like a shot.
Modafinale
Stick to 200tdi turbo and intercooler upgrades make you think you are going to go faster but why ! it’s not a race car and unless you spend lots of ££££ it never will be . open the window stick your elbow out and just enjoy the view
