When I was paddling the worse the weather the better the ride. :good:

We lost some boats out to sea off the Glaslyn and had to inform the coast guard.

Some of the Welsh streams in spate are truly awesome. Lets hope this paddler is found safe and well.

This. If you’re an adrenaline junkie there isn’t much point going when it’s flat calm; a bit like riding your motorbike at 30mph.

I despair, I really do. Please don't think that us kayakers (The article says canoe, but I'm guessing this was actually a kayak?) are all like that! Sadly, there are too many though.

So many safety measures have been missed here. I just hope the rescuers find them alive - and then tear into them for it. The RNLI have a bit of a rep for being a bit soft in some cases, but I'm hoping whoever does the rescuing doesn't go easy this time!

key word. This reads like it was a lone paddler, which isn't not a good plan. And you had the sense to inform the coastguard.

Our holiday cottage is just upstream from the Pass on the Glaslyn in Beddgelert. I have to say, if I had the right yak, the right skills, the right kit and the right people around, that river does look a blast! We're up there in a few weeks, but if I yak, it'll be in the sea. I'm not sure a 15ft SOT is quite the right ride for the Glaslyn. Apparently it's up 1.97m, right now. Fun and games!

Must admit done a wee bit kayaking and hoping to get back into it,

But I never really see the point in having 2 or more folk together, if u get into difficulty in a fast stretch the chances off ur mate turning back up stream to save u is fairly slim.

Very first time I went down local river in a kayak got stuck on a Weir with it bashing my head off concrete, thankfully shallow enough I was not underwater. Eventually managed to get out myself but my mate couldn't get back to me that quickly.

Just got to be confident in being able to rescue urself althou I haven't done any true white water in this country.

Done a bit off rafting abroad in some decent white water and even with the pro safety guys u still have to save urself most off the time.

Some rivers u need the spate water to give u the depth throu some shallows.

But u just got to be sensible know ur own limitations for ur skill level.

Just like hill walkers if u have the right knowledge gear u can go out in almost any weather, but if ur a numpty with no gear/idea even the simplest of walks could be dangerous in wrong weather

The canoeist was supposedly missing at Taff's Well, thats a good twenty miles inland and though it will be up because of the rain its not normally any thing more than a big stream at that point.

Tom Jones commented on it saying that when he was a boy growing up in Treforest the river Taff ran black but its cleaned up now and salmon have "allegedly" been seen but not by me

The search appears to have been stood down now

You buddy up and always have a throwline available. With the right skill, you don't need to get to get to them, you just need to get to a point where you can pull them out. And you break the run up as much as you can, so you're never far from each other. You could run the whole river...or you could hit each rapid section, then peal off into slack water to allow your buddy to run. You're always close then and a throw line can be a life saver.

If you're stuck under water, if your mate knows it, they'll find a way; desperation will kick in. On thing I can guarantee is that if you're on your own, no one's coming.

The Glaslyn, mentioned by Oowee, is like that. Markers with ticks and crosses are all along the run through the Pass. If you can see the X, it's too shallow. It fluctuates in a matter of hours.
