nicknsd1978
Bought myself a nice little 20 bore yildiz for my second season of rough shooting. No long range birds but what cartridge do I go for....28g No 6 or 25g No 6 plus also what choke combination baring in mind I cant imagine the choke sizing will be as accurate as my Beretta
Stonepark
28g no 7 will kill pheasants and smaller sub 40 yards, ***** & **** Or 28g no6 and **** & ***. Or 25g no6 and *** & **.
sam triple
I bought some Gamebore regal 28 grm no 6 fibre wad , do the job reasonably priced too
rapid .25
Same as Sam and found them to be very good cartridges.
nicknsd1978
The regal was going to be my first choice although was reading that they are a very “punchy” cartridge

For the 20, although it's personal preference, smaller calibre, smaller load, fewer pellets and shorter range all smacks of 7 shot to me. So, Lyalvale Supreme. nicknsd1978
Is that the lyalvale 25g in 7 shot?...guessing 25g is fine for game unless they wouldn’t do them

nicknsd1978
I will buy a box of each and try them. The gun is as light as a Deaves compared to my beretta so imagine it’ll kick like a mule although I was going to get a slab of 28g No 8’s for some rounds of Skeet just to get use to the swing of the gun
London Best
It won’t kick like a mule with a proper 20 bore load of between 21 and 25 grams.
nicknsd1978
the lyalvale 25g in 6 or 7 shot sound to be the ones then...so next would be what choke for your average walked up birds. I currently have 1/4 top and and 1/2 bottom
wymberley
Just on 5&1/2lbs here, no problem with the 25s. If you have some choke/the quarry is of a size, 6s are also an option

I currently have 1/4 top and and 1/2 bottom It depends on whether that is a measurement or a performance. A few at a pattern plate wouldn't do any harm. For rough shooting as there's not a great difference between two adjacent choke figures, I prefer 2 steps, so 1/4 by 3/4. Just as long as you can strike with 5 or 6 pellets on average. nicknsd1978
What do you mean by “measurement or performance”
Dave at kelton
21-25gm load in 6’s will do all you need at normal ranges. No need to put a 12 bore load through it.

A full choke can throw half choke patterns with some loads, or all loads, or not. Pattern testing is the only way to be sure, not what is stamped on the gun or choke. My advice would be to stop worrying about choke and just shoot. Non of my guns carry hardly any choke and work just fine.
nicknsd1978
Yes maybe I am thinking too much, probably why I miss so much...need to learn to switch brain off. Game shooting is still all new to me

Every one of my 8 shotguns has either an imp cyl or true cylinder right barrel. Most of the left barrels are only quarter choke. The tightest barrel carries 15 thou of choke. Odds on are though that for a IC performance you may just need a tad more choke than the nominal.
