Which cctv

Hi, I’m hoping someone on here has a bit of knowledge on this, I’m sure at least one will.

I need an outdoor cctv camera, that can be connected to the internet by a 20m long cable, an email/text me when it spots someone.

Id really rather not have one of these subscription service type ones if possible.

Features like being able to talk through the camera, move the camera via an app, turn on floodlights/sirens etc are all good, but not essential.

I bought a Swann 3mp kit once, but couldn’t read my truck number plate about 10m away so sent it back.

I see a lot of hikvision cameras about..? Also reolink and Arlo are two cameras I see when I search online.

thanks for any suggestions

Pete

I have also been looking at security cameras and the Reolink cameras seem to come out very well in the reviews I have read and watched, build quality, sound and picture quality are top notch, if you want the best quality pictures look at their PoE range.

I would say one thing about battery powered cameras and that is most seem to have poor-ish battery life in heavy traffic areas, even with a solar panel fitted they did not keep the batteries topped up during the winter months.

As you say trying to find one that does not require a cloud account subscription is difficult.

Not what you're looking for exactly -

I have a Nedis doorbell camera...works on wi-fi and records events onto micro SD card....no subscription...free .....and it can also be set to send an alert to your phone for movement or /and for doorbell use.

They may do a CCTV camera with similar specs.

Whatever system you choose make sure you have a serious think about position and make sure the area is bathed in white light at night when someone is present. In my experience Nv is not what its cracked up to be evidentially and white light is so much better for identification. Seen so many cameras that have poor picture quality, in the wrong place to show anything useful, covered in cobwebs,  the operator dont know who to use it, records for little time before overwriting, stolen when the place was broken into and just an empty metal box and so on.

Whilst your at it make the venue harder to break into, pwrhaps cut down hedges that shield the viewer from the road, a sequential alarm linked to police, a smoke maker inside. Reinforced door locks and hinges, window bars or laminate the outside pane, simple things that don't cost much and make your place that little bit harder  than elsewhere. Most can be done yourself.

@GingerCat thanks, it would mainly be to alert me, say if I’m at work, up the top field or in bed. Then I can deal with it from there. Identification apparently isn’t much help as courts won’t accept most home cctv I keep being told. So long as it can read a number plate and let me know how many people are there it’s all good. And yes, it would be combined with a powerful flood light.

i did look at the ring cameras, I can’t remember why but I wasn’t too keen on them.

The courts accept it happily  if the picture is good so you've been told wrong. I can't remember ever having any not accepted or ever heard of that either.   Mostly its not good quality and does nothing for anyone. Often due to poor position/cobwebs/ir. Nice white light helps a lot.

A number plate is nice if you want to know what the plate said, it doesn't tell you if its on the wrong car or who was driving if the picture is poor. Knowing the car is meaningless if you don't have a picture of who was in it or got out of it. Positioning is critical for that and you will want more than 1 camera normally. Probably 4 or 5 depending on the layout. Headlights often blank out the picture if ir or low light. Een lots of headlights appearing and driving away again with no clue as to who wlit was or what they did. Multiple cameras will deal with that. Its worth a think if you are spending the money on it.

That’s good to know. Have you had to take a lot of cctv to court then?

i had heard stories where people could recognise who it was, but as it wasn’t to a high enough quality it wasn’t enough.

The main people in worried about though are pik - I mean travellers. And they won’t et convicted anyway. Even if the police turned up while they were loading my quad. They’d probably give them a hand and send them in their way....

I've taken lots of things to court including cctv.

Travellers do get convicted, I find the biggest barrier is people willing to make statements or stand in court. Without someone making a statement ie putting their evidence, actual evidence as well. Not hearsay rumour or conjecture.  On paper and if necessary telling the judge and jury about it, nothing will go anywhere. Its a set in stone part of our legal system.
