Realale
Is there any difference between a Trap cartridge and Sporting cartridges? What makes a shell a Trap cartridge?

What makes a shell a Trap cartridge? It's the shot size that normally defines a 'trap' cartridge, ie # 7.5 shot size (trap) - # 4, 5 or 6 Sporting. These can vary. Trap shells are designed to shoot tight patterns with 7 or 7 1/2 or even 8s from plastic wads and the associated trap choke constrictions. Any registered competition would be limited to 28 grammes and size 6 as the largest allowed.

enfieldspares
Supposedly, back in the day, the velocity was faster but, certainly, the shot was harder with a greater antimony content 5% than standard game cartridges that were about 3%. And also supposedly the shot was selected for greater consistency of diameter and size variation.

enfieldspares
They will be good medicine on crows. You can look forward to birds folded "dead in the air" if you do your part. Great for magpies also with it being such a small bird in truth.

Bigdavet
You might find manufacturers of trap shells use a smooth burning powder which tend to be slightly slower in velocity to reduce recoil to minimise fatigue in a trap shooter !
