mosa
Quick question i am looking for a cheap shooting vehicle and have a choice of a few fortracks for around £350 to £500 or a mint td jeep for around £1100. which would you choose & why. ie mpg etc etc parts, faults cheers in advance of any replies
liammobey1
I would stay away from the cherokee 2.5 diesel as they are prone to head gasket failures and usaually require all 4 cylinder heads replacing. not a cheap job!
Cranfield
Keep away from the Cherokee Jeep, the friends I know that have bought cheap ones just for shooting, have had endless expensive problems with them.

J@mes
Jeeps have major problems with the diffs, I know 4 people who have had them and they have all had the same problem.
al4x
Its a tricky question for me. I've a fourtrak Independant and its fine for what I need it for but it is basic and the ride is basic. The Jeep will be steets ahead on the comfort front. If you need it as a shooting bus the fourtrak will do very well as long as you watch the rust. As for the Landrover well a 1K landrover will be an absolute dog and need repairing far more often then the Jeep
luckytrigger
Never had a jeep but bought an old 2.8 fourtrack a couple of months ago with a full ticket and service history only 95k best £1000 ive ever spent and streets ahead of my old vitara
Zapp
Another vote for the fourtrak here. Cracking vehicle, I have yet to find a place boggy enough to stop it. I run mine partly on cooking oil to save money (now that the law has changed so low level users dont have to pay duty), and it runs just as well if not better than on straight benz. It helps that the fourtrak has good big injectors, I dont know much about the x trail, you might want to check this out. I dont want to say "go for it" in case you knacker your car up (though any diesel engine can run on a mix, it is the ratio which makes the difference). The link below should help. I should point out that we are talking about the product labelled "vegetable oil", not "sunflower oil", which is too thick for many engines. http://www.ravenfamily.org/andyg/vegoil.htm As stated in the link, it is best to start out on a 10% mix of oil to 90% diesel to start, and then work your way up. I will be running mine on a 33% oil mix this winter, and then going back to my current mix of about 40% oil in summer. If you start out with 10% and then work up, if the engine starts to labour you know you have hit your limit. Dont go above 33% in winter as it will get gloopy in your tank and give you problems on starting in the cold. Also, be prepared for some very funny looks in the supermarket carpark, and dont be surprised that your car will start smelling like a chippy! One VERY serious word of warning though, DO NOT put any oil in your tank if your car is new, as you will void any warranty you have. Hope this helps you out. If you want any more help feel free to PM me. ZB

Zapp
Thanx...just got to be brave enough to try it now......lol lol, just have a look in your owners manual, find out what 10% of your capacity is and give it a go. A word of warning though, I'm bloody hooked now. Not long before I build myself a filtration tank and start pestering the local chippies for their waste oil... MMMmm free fuel... biff
How legal is this, lets say that you get pulled over and have your tank dipped, do you get a fine for using cooking oil?, like you would if you were to use tax free fuel (gas oil)?? hwr
I've got a petrol rav4 ugly I know but nimble and does 30 mpg! plus it'll sit at 85 without seeming pushed, mind you its the high 20's then. 10 years old 1750 quid with 52000 on it via autotrader, like new Great bit of kit its a jap so v reliable also really quiet, frightened a dog walker to death the other day down one of the tracks as he didnt hear it coming and wasnt expecting a vehicle there. you dont need a heavy 4wd to carry a couple of guns and some decoys and if its thick mud then perhaps you shouldnt be there? Fourtrkas will run on most things if my brother is anything to go by you can still drive them 10 miles on a tank of petrol
