myuserid
Wondered what the hell it was, I was watching its back end burrow into the wood then something black popped up next to it (did a U turn). Bet it could give you quite a nip as well, when it was in the wood I poked it with a flower label (I know thats not the best thing to do) while I was trying to figure out what it could be. It grabbed the label which took quite a bit of force to pull the label back, thats what shocked me and made me take a few pics Its over the wall now in some rotten wood doing its thing

paul65
In my youth I was meeting a girl for a date and I sat on a bench under some trees in the park waiting for her. We headed off to the boozer and after about 10 minutes sat in there I felt something crawling up the inside of my jacket. I put my hand in and pulled out one of those grubs about two inches long that I guess had got on me in the park. Things didn't last with the young lady, apparently she considered that the amount of screaming I did in the pub when I saw the grub in my hand was in some way unmanly. Lord Geordie
Don't know about WOOD wasps but a few year ago I had a MUD wasp in the garden and it scared the crud out of me. This thing was about 5 to 6 inches long and sounded more like a helicopter than a wasp. Reading up on them they are solitary and rarely sting BUT when you get up close with one you run first and think later LG

berettaman1
Great,! I am glad someone else has come across these hornets, last year I was standing in a wood waiting for pigeons to come in , in a shoot I have about 300 yards from the river severn, it was quiet nowt about, when I saw what I thought was a big wasp hovering about two foot above the base of a tree , as it was so quiet I decided to have a pot at it with my AA410 after 2 shots it exploded and I sat down with a smile,!! AGh Agh, within a minute I was , and all around me was being divebombed by hornets!!, Jeeze I tell you now it was a real scary moment I was glad I was wearing black underpants, I just sat there scared to death as these things ,in their hundreds buzzed about looking for something to attack, As I knew it was too far to run , I just sat with my cammo gear and veil frozen, and I had a few come down and hit the peak on on my hat, bump, bump,! Wow I have kept clear of that tree ever since.!

Pushkin
Hmmmmmmmmm not too sure about your identification guys - check this link for info on the wood wasp and its size:- http://www.kendall-bioresearch.co.uk/hymen.htm and this link that gives a picture (at the bottom) of a larvae - click on the picture itself to enlarge it. This article http://www.natland.info/Wildlife.html tells you how harmless these wood wasps are. I'm wondering if this may be what you found:- Lesser stag beetle. Often arrives hidden in firewood logs as a large grub. Save any with signs of holes or rot, and adults may emerge in June. This link gives pictures of grown beetles:- http://www.museumofreading.org.uk/collecti...tagbeetl-21.pdf scary things. More pics http://www.danambrose.co.uk/Stag/picture_gallery.htm this link show a picture of the larvae as well http://www.arkive.org/media/7E14EE75-322B-4AC8- hope this is of some help to you. FM Yep, I stood frozen to the spot for about 20 mins, they were about one and a half " long, just like wasps on steroids, what amazed me was they kept headbutting the peak on my cammo cap.I allways spray my hands face and neck with a insect repellent when on this land as its near to the river and in the summer there are lots of nats, and midges about, I was real lucky. cheers.
