Harry136
Hi Just refinishing a shotgun stock, I'm going to be using some wood grain filler and sealer as there are some big holes in the grain! Do I put the filler on the chequering as well? TIA

oldypigeonpopper
Hello, if it is walnut buy or get some walnut saw dust and mix with a clear glue , make sure all the old finish is taken off , clean with white spirit and dry off, then fill holes, once dry finish off , walnut stain stock oil mix
Diver One
I've done a few now. For sawdust I take the butt pad off, create sawdust away from the edges or better still, from down where the fixing bolt is. That way it HAS to be the right stuff
Harry136
I think I am just going to use someone who knows what they’re doing! Any recommendations for stock finishers?

I’ve seen plenty of Nath92’s work, it is very good. Doing it yourself is not that difficult if you want an oil finish, patience is the key. I strip mine with meths first, and then wash off with white spirit. The first coat is always a 50/50 mix of white spirit and BLO, and for any grain filling I use sawdust/oil mix. Allowing the oil to dry is vital, hence the need for patience.
Red696
Bought a Franchi AL48 a couple of weeks ago as thought there might be some OK wood under the very heavy varnish. Here’s a couple of pics of the progress so far. Whatever that varnish was it was tough old stuff needing 5 covers of stripper and 800 grit wet n dry. This is it with 4 coats of Alkanet, it’s no high grade but looks much better in oil. I’ll photo the buttstock later.
Red696
looks better than dark and battered varnish.

What size Alkanet bottle did you need for that?

Usually do 5 coats before moving on to BLO and finally my own wax.
