Honda CRV for me. I am on my third one now. Nissan XTrail was a previous car, but the CRV has a lot more boot space, and you can get a 32" barrelled gun across the boot. I have never had it stuck, having driven around many a Range Rover that was  ! I get 30mpg around town, nearer 40mpg on a run.

I had a Subaru Outback for the same reasons you mentioned. Lovely big boot and could easily handle light off-roading.

I liked the car but it everything went wrong at the same time. Dpf, egr kept going.  But the biggest problems where the fuel lines corroded leaking diesel.

I would have another 4x4 estate car but not a Subaru. I like the Skoda superb which is a strong contender.

And every bit of advice, here and elsewhere, will tell you to buy Japanese.

Did you do a lot of short journeys in it?  They will knacker any modern diesel.

Got an Audi A6 Allroad, 2013, cracking car, 3.0 v6 diesel, adjustable suspension is very useful for fields and roughish tracks, went to the borders in mine, @5 miles down rough tracks, through 2 burns, then parked on a bit of uneven ground, the suspension self levelled. Went for a stalk then slept in it overnight, next morning drove back, car was great didn't miss a beat. Smooth on the road and capable off it, just don't try doing serious off road stuff cause it isn't made to do it.

I normally do about at least a 90 mile long round motorway trip ones a week plus a longer trip in the shooting season.  But it was the Covid lockdown which made me cut my longer trips and it was just my short run to work. I have a Nissan diesel which is newer and it has never had an issue but no lockdowns, thankfully! I did consider getting the dpf removed but I was reluctant to do it.

It was the leaking fuel and corrosion of the fuel lines and suspension parts which for a 12 year old car is pretty poor. The fuel lines leaked in multiple places.

Well a little update….I’m still none the wiser 🙂, thanks to everyone for their opinion, seems 4x4 estates are a viable option, must admit I do like the look of the Audi allroad.

The Honda crv is front runner if I go down the SUV route.

Had an A6 Allroad 3.0tdi for a couple of years. It’s a really good car in all kinds of circumstances. It will cruise all day on the autoroute and autobahn, once took it up to 140mph for ages in Germany and it was a doddle. Luggage capacity is huge and it will go off road surprisingly well if you’re careful. Find an Audi specialist for servicing and it’s a great package for shooting, fishing and carting the family around too. Swapped mine for a Disco 4 and was sad to see it go.

Skoda Octavia Scout estate 2.0TDI here. Not much offroading, but it's competent when needed, and that's on road tyres.

Skoda garages are expensive, and Skoka were pretty **** about the whole emissions fixing scandal - so not sure I'd have another. But generally, I like it!
