Sussexboy
I have just broken a tine off of my favourite garden fork. I hate heavy clay soil. I know I could replace the fork, but it wouldn’t be this one. Would the tine be able to be welded back on, and if so would it be as strong?

oldypigeonpopper
hello, as Simon mentioned above, an Arc welder with stainless rods would do that tine 👍
Sussexboy
Thank you gentlemen. I shall have a word with my friendly metal fabricator, if I can track him down. 41 minutes ago, ditchman said: i did the same thing many years ago...........yes it can be welded on.....i found that where the break was ..there was a fault in the metal....that was 15 years ago ..still going strong Indeed, there must have been a crack in the metal as part of the break is shiny and part is a dull brown. It seems daft, but this fork just fits me and I want to keep it going.

RyanMc
Centre drill the tine and fork body and stick a small rod in, groove the edges out a tad and weld it up, preheat both sides a bit too, always helps the odd bits and pieces of welding I have done previously. If its already bajaxxed, you have nothing to fear if you wreck it trying to fix it.

Hi OPP, I realise it was a tongue in cheek remark but just checking whether that was the guy you meant. I know that The Repair Shop is very orchestrated but still find it good to watch, especially that Suzie Fletcher, she could tan my hide any day. Sorry to the OP for slightly derailing his thread. Sussexboy
Long awaited update, I am sure you have all been on the edge of your seats wanting to know what happened to that Sussexboy’s favourite garden fork. Well to cut a long story short, I finally caught up with my welding buddy on a shoot today and passed on the said fork. It is at this moment sitting on a bench in his shop awaiting his not so tender ministrations. Watch this space…………

oldypigeonpopper
Hello, I have done a few repairs, Stainless small rods and Arc Welder, after welding and clean off and add piece of stainless tube over and welded, But you need to think if this will make the tine more brittle ?? From what I understand, doesn’t welding move carbon molecules around inside the metal and change the metallurgical structure? The broken tine looks like quite a coarse crystalline structure in the cross section, much coarser than I would have imagined for stainless steel. So perhaps it is a low quality steel. It has served me well up to now though.

Sussexboy
Yes, it was a Spear and Jackson stainless steel fork. I have had it some years now. A new one is not expensive but it won’t be the same!

Hello, Before you try and mend why not send an email to Spear and Jackson or phone, 0114 281 4242 and see if they can sort out, i know the warranty has lapsed,
