East Anglian Game & Country Fair

Recommended Posts

We've been a few times, it's nothing special and certainly not worth £25 each to get in.

That said, it could be a day off from Land Rover repairs and house renovation, still mulling it over.

I miss the old Fenland game fair at Quy.

I found it better and more convenient at the Norwich showground than the new setting near Thetford , I will give that one a miss and hopefully go to the Sandringham fair in September , this seem more of a friendly fair and is held in spotless surroundings .

Yes the Fenland still take some beating , watching the ole thrashing machine working on a lovely hot Summers day while enjoying one of those big ham rolls with a cup of tea in a china cup , will linger with me while the ole memory bank is still working .    MM

We used to travel up from Kent every year for the Fenland Fair which as others have said was a small but very enjoyable day out.

A sad day when it was discontinued.

Aye, we’ve been before as we are close, still mulling over whether to attend. The Fenland Fair was a smashing event that is sadly missed, we used to be regular attendees.

I don't know if you went or not but a friend of mine went up on Sunday and said it was very poor , not many people about and nowhere near as many stalls as you would normally expect.

Mind you it was wet and cold and not the sort of day to be walking around a wet fair ground , and no I didn't go .    MM

No, didn't go, as you say too cold and wet.

its getting smaller and smaller every year just the organisers space it out a bit to make it seem bigger I help out on a stand every year.

its become to expensive to attend for family's or say retired people 25 per person so two of you that 50 nickers with out fuel to get there or a bite to eat at again over inflated prices of 9 pound for a burger or  7.50 for a bacon roll.  weather didn't help either with attendees.

Like you say it's an expensive day out now and having been to quite a few over the years they no longer hold the attraction that they once did , we used to go at the early Holkham ones , started off with a very good fair in lovely surroundings , the surroundings didn't change much but the fair itself ended up like a Sunday market and then it rapidly went downhill ,they then held it every two years instead of yearly and now I am not sure if it is still held at all , the same thing happened at the Suffolk Game Fair held near Saxmundam , again all right at first and then the bubble burst and now I think the glory days of game fairs are long gone and very much doubt if the good days will ever return .    MM

OWW MUCH.!!!  !!!  It's one thing to spend out but  £9 FOR A BURGER and £7.50 for a BACON ROLL,!!!.  HOW MUCH FOR A CUP OF TEA.? £5.00  How do they justify prices like that.?  I'd not pay on principle of it. And £25 to get in is ridiculous also. I  don't know what there was to see but nowadays you won't go to anything like this and pick up bargains.  All prices are elevated to silly amounts and no one makes any money.  when did anyone in recent times go to a show like this to buy a gun.  All it ever seems to be is a load of general market tat.

SIMPLE, they know many people are too lazy to take food with them, they in effect have a captive audience trapped and hungry.

you sure you're not a Yorkshireman, you'll get in trouble using their warcry:whistling:

We Were in a street market in Turkey and from the next row of stalls came the war cry.... OWW MUCH;;  DI YE THINK AH COMT DOWN INT LAST SHOWER.  But it wasn't from a disgusted Yorkshire man.   It was from a gang of Turkish youts. Between them they had every British accent off pat. They went through Scousers , Geordies, the whole range.  They should have made a comedy act up.  My accent is Marshian, from the Romney marsh area of Kent.  I  have been asked if I came from the west country but it is pure marshian

I would agree that the best years of the various local game fairs are likely to be over. Nowadays I doubt the economies for both traders and public would stack up without charging large entry fees for the public and high pitch fees for traders and organisations - especially when shows are organised by profit seeking professional event organising and promotion companies.

I also think that generations change as well , as the old generations pass on then have the next generation got the same interest ? , we also used to go each year to the Royal Norfolk Show , that was the same , high entry fee , car park charge , paying to get in the flower show and at one the dog show as well , a total rip off , as numbers dropped they thought by charging more it would get them out of trouble , all it meant was even less people go and if the numbers are down from the previous year then they blame it on the weather or anything else other than the high cost of getting into the show and I believe last year it was £8 for the car park , all the various game fairs I have been to up and down the country the Norfolk Show was the only one where you paid for parking your car , even the East Anglian Game Fair when it was held on the show ground you didn't have to pay to park your car so how come they have to charge when the Norfolk Show is held on the same ground ?????       MM

I can't disagree with any of that MM. Add H&S demands and sky high insurance costs and I can see the kind of dedicated show that we once knew and enjoyed for a modest outlay will remain a thing of the past.

And to pay for the expenses  of the vast army of the clan walking about in Grey suits , a bowler hat and a Royal Norfolk Show tie , there seem to be nearly as many as them as there are fare paying public
