Shambam1962
I have been thinking of turning a clock since I had my lathe this time last year. I finally got around to making my 1st pedestal clock yesterday and received my clock inserts today in the post, and glued and fitted together. I had been looking at different designs on the internet for inspiration, and something not too complicated, and finally chose this design. Since turning the clock, I have found a similar design on the Record Power website, and this has a concurve face where the clock insert fits, and looks more finished. The next clock will have more detail, and is going to be made from Zebrano wood, which has a beautiful grain, when sanded and waxed. This clock was my test piece, and I will definitely change a few things, along the way, on the next clock. I really enjoyed turning it, and pleased with the end result 👍

Yes Gordon, you can buy different face diameters and hole fit size clock inserts. You just drill the correct hole size and push fit . Some have spring clips to hold, but I chose the rubber gasket style, and so easy to fit 👍

Shambam1962
I started the Mk2 version of a Zebrano style pillar clock this afternoon.and made a few modifications. I made the body of the clock with a concave front and stepped the housing back 5mm and the clock insert sits good and looks better. I made a finial and the pillar and when I went to make the base, I was out of Zebrano wood, so will have to wait a day or two to complete. I very much like the results so far, and the Zebrano wood is so nice to work with
wisdom
Absolutely brilliant.I envy people's skills we have fantastic artists, stickmakers, turner's,land rover restorers indeed the list is endless.I am handy with most things but nowhere near that level you have.I have a good pile of seasoned hazel so when I can find some antler and horn I am going to have a go at stickmaking.never done it before. Keep up the good work.
Shambam1962
Thank you jall25, Loki and wisdom for your comments. This time last year, I received my wood lathe by chance. I always had an interest in wood turning, but had never used a a lathe before, and watched YouTube videos for information and advice, and ideas. I started off turning beads and coves on pieces of scrap wood, to get used to handling the chisels and made 2 oak table lamps for my daughters. As I built up confidence I moved on to the different projects and still learning as I go and enjoying it 👍 I haven’t spent a fortune and purchased a selection of quality second hand chisels over the year, and many people are put off purchasing second hand rusty chisels. I spend a bit of time removing the surface rust and sharpening the chisels, and they are ready to use again. My latest purchase was 5 quality chisels for £15 which was a real bargain and cleaned up really well 👍 If I can use the lathe, anyone can ! Jonty
That’s a beautiful creation. And I think your choice of stain has finished it off really well - great skills!
Shambam1962
Thanks Jonty👍 I received my order this afternoon for Zebrano wood blanks. I made the base to complete the clock and all glued up. I’m very pleased with the end result, and the Zebrano wood has a beautiful grain pattern. I will start the 4 legged carousel style clock over the weekend, and hope I don’t encounter any problems. Fingers crossed 🤞 Edited July 18 by Shambam1962 Replaced photo

Zebrano certainly has a lovely grain to it. I’ve now used up the Zebrano you very kindly sent me on more bottle stoppers and have ordered more of the same wood to try different projects. They certainly won’t be as intricate as your creations as I’m still on the bottom of that learning curve. I take it that you used the Chestnut friction polish on the Zebrano. Keep posting and I look forward to seeing the carousel clock in due course. OB
Shambam1962
Cheers, thanks Chris👍 I seal the sanded wood with sanding sealer and 2 or 3 coats of friction polish until happy. Finish off with Microcrystalline Wax which has a good gloss finish and is more durable than friction polish. Watch Mylands Friction Polish - Finishing Guide on YouTube by Craft Supplies USA. I adopt the same procedure with the Chestnut Friction Polish, and very pleased with the results 👍👍
Shambam1962
I had a bit of shed time yesterday morning, and managed to turn the top and base of the carousel clock. As I was finishing the base, I caught the top edge of the base section with a gouge chisel and took a very big chunk out of it. I was absolutely gutted and left it in the lathe, and thought it was going to be scrap 🤬 I went up the house and had a coffee, and returned to the piece an hour later, once I calmed down. I looked at the piece in the lathe and managed to save the piece, by machining below the missing chunk and altering the shape 👍 I managed to remove any damage caused, by my error, and it looks as if it was supposed to be this shape. The top is sealed with sanding sealer and the grain really shows through. The base has a bit more sanding, before sealing, and the grain pattern looks really nice and will look good once finished. Only the 4 pillars and clock housing and finial left to turn, and I was thinking of making them from a contrasting wood, but I will have to check what I have available ! When the clock is completed I will post the photo of it, fingers crossed 🤞
Shambam1962
Finally finished all the parts for the carousel clock, and sealed and polished today . Dry fitted the parts together, to make sure it all fit's Will glue the clock together tomorrow. I’m very pleased with the end result, and especially when I only had the diameter to work off, and nothing else 👍 The Zebrano wood polishes up very nicely and looks striking with it’s grain pattern.
