Sunday Shooting!

Recommended Posts

After a good afternoon last weekend I was itching to get out again, and spotted another rape stubble with a good number of pigeons building up on it early in the week.
The hot weather and lack of shade put me off through the week as well as not being able to push enough work back to have some time off, but I was hoping they’d still be there along with the stubble by the weekend!
I found some time on Saturday afternoon to nip out and check the field again, to find no less pigeons than previous visits, more if anything.
Sundays weather looked ok, and there turned out to be a bit more wind than I was expecting which was a bonus.
In the hide and set up at 13:15, the first shot put up hundreds from all round the area and offered a few shots immediately followed by a short lull. This didn’t last long and in the first hour I’d shot 50 without leaving the hide and a fair few were belly up.
A quick tidy up and set up some dead birds on cradles, I was back in the action and the 100 came up at the two hour mark. I put out a flapper as they still weren’t committing fully which made a difference and from then on until I finished they seemed much more intent on getting into the pattern. I stopped shooting at 18:15 with a few still flighting and started the pick up. With 206 on the clicker I collected 202.
Another belter of an afternoon!

Very good. It is quite amazing how pigeons materialize out of nowhere.

Amazes me how for six months of the year I can’t find a pigeon, yet other months they’re in huge numbers.
Year on year changes a lot here too!

They were the same on Sunday for me to a lot of birds skirted the decoys or totally ignored them flaring away from the magnet  lthe last 90 minutes they decoyed very well  and that's when I made the bulk of the bag

Some incredible bags been shot lately , a 100 day is a Red letter day and a 200 bird day is for most people a lifetime best , as for B B nearly 500 bird days , well I was referring to human beings , with Ben's stamina and having two young children I have got my doubts he is human ,

Did yer dad give you a look during the day , or do he rest on the Sabbath ?    MM

Dad came along for the ride again and provided a valuable service funnelling the pigeons up to me, in the comfort of my truck.
200 is indeed top shooting for me as I only tend to go for 3-5 hours, and to be honest I wouldn’t really want to shoot 500 bird days as it would stop me going out so often (getting rid of large numbers is a headache)!
I’ve also got 3 young children at home so time is of the essence.
