John kerry
Looking to have my wife's berretta 686S barrels re-blued.they have been prepped ready .They are mid vented as well as the top rib.found a company in south yorkshire that does hi quality blacking. I have seen work done by them and its A1.the only thing is I've heard of the ribs coming undone during the heat process. Anyone else heard of this.Anyone recently had there barrels done(cold or hot)blueing, blacking, and what's the cost. It's her pride and joy and would not be worth living if it came back in bits. Try Barrelblacker on here. Dan Bromley does excellent work and is reasonably priced. I can fully recommend him. OB

Fil
Unless the ribs are soft soldered the ribs will not lift from either hot salt blacking and definitely not hot water blacking. RE an earlier post reply I pointed out on some early model Berettas the ribs were soft soldered but all 686's are hard soldered or "brazed" on ribs. SO Berettas have soft soldred ribs as do B25 Brownings. I've refixed ribs on 100's of gun barrels over the past 39 years. I did my own blacking too. The slow rust hot water method was preferred as it was less messy than the caustic blacking. It took longer but I could use that process on all gun barrels. The hot caustic process attacks the soft solder in the ribs and the ribs fall off. Nowadays I'm so busy I don't have time to black (and I'm fed up with everything the work shop rusting from the steam!) so I send all mine to Paul Stevens (Stevens and Johnson) He does an amazing black. And Damascus brown.
BobbyH
Is there any significant difference in cold vs hot blue-ing?

Scully
Good to know there’s another contact name. Perhaps Barrelblacker doesn’t venture on here nowadays? I PM’d him on 22nd August and have had no reply. I’ll contact him via the Dan Bromley route. 👍

I havent used him for Blueing, but when i had a firing pin snap on my .410, he did it there and then for me and re-built my gun from when another local stafford 'Reputable' gunsmith took apart my gun to replace the firing pin, didnt fix it, made it worse, then gave it back to me in pieces. How he works on such intricate pieces amazed me.. They blued a Sako S491 action for me and a when Darren reassembled the bolt a small spring decided to not play ball and went for a fly round the workshop. Darren couldn't be bothered to find the 4mm square puce of spring steel so knocked another one up within a few minutes. Time served smith and nice team working there.
